What became of Amelia Earhart's plane when it disappeared over the Pacific 75 years ago has long intrigued aviation fans. On Tuesday, U.S. government officials and a private historical group announced a new effort to locate the famed aviator's twin-engine Lockheed.

The effort, projected to kick off in July, will be financed with roughly half a million dollars in private funds, according to people familiar with the details. It will focus on a remote Pacific atoll called Nikumaroro, halfway between Hawaii and Australia, near where the plane carrying Ms. Earhart and a companion may have gone down during an attempted around-the-world flight.

A search team will concentrate on the deep waters near Nikumaroro, which was the site of a 2010 search that focused on coral reefs and nearby shallow waters, these people said.

The impetus for the latest expedition is a recently discovered photo, apparently taken near Nikumaroro just months after Ms. Earhart's disappearance. Some experts believe it may show a portion of the plane's landing gear.

I’ve read similar articles over the last day or so. None of them print the old photo that shows the landing gear. I wonder why.

My guess is the image of the landing gear is so microscopic that you wouldn't be able to see it in a normal newspaper/website photo

Wow. That’s nuts. A half million dollars to investigate a shadow on an old photo. That could be anything.

They aren't going to find anything ... aliens kidnapped her.

Looks possible to me. What are the odds that a British guy snaps a photo of a grounded ship on a deserted island and the plane's landing gear is in the photo?

Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who discovered the wreckage of the Titanic and the Bismarck, is advising on the expedition.

"If you ever want a case of finding a needle in a haystack, this is at the top of the list," he told the Associated Press. Ballard heads the Institute of Exploration at Mystic Aquarium.

And they knew about where both those ships went down. They don't even know where her plane went down. Jeez she is dead the plane is gone. This is a mystery for a generation who is going to be gone in a few years and after that who really cares?

Now I know all you believe that Elvis is alive which is way more important than this drivel
:)

Elvis is dead?

The search is very interesting to me. I for one would actually turn on the TV to see this Discovery show.
