I posted this in the marine electronics forum and got some good feed back:
Just bought a used boat and am trying to figure out a plan for electronics. Currently the boat has:
Lowrance LMS-525c DF
LGC-3000 GPS receiver
Unknown transom mounted “skimmer” xducer
Icom M302 VHF
I’d like to add a 10” MFD networked to the LMS-525c. The goal is to have large, detailed cartography and engine vitals from the 2007 Yamaha F250 on the 10” and a small sounder display when running. Then have a large, detailed sonar display and small cartography display while fishing. I also want the benefit of duplicity if one MFD dies.
The vast majority of my time is spent in <200’ of water. Fishing is 90% in less than 40’. For the sake of continuity and price point I’m thinking of a gen 2 HDS-10. Before I start spending money and cutting holes in my console…

Can the HDS work in a NMEA 2000/ Ether network w/ the current LGC- 3000 and xducer? Are its capabilities and performance advantages diluted by using these older components?
Will the LMS display the cartography from a Navionics SD card in the HDS? Will it share waypoints and “other stuff”? Will it be able to redraw the (I presume) larger files at a reasonable rate?
Is it possible/ worth trying to network the engine? I haven’t heard many success stories.
Is the Icom M302 a capable VHF worth cutting a hole in my console for?
Feed back’s appreciated.

But it seems that there are a bunch of different SKUs on the BOE site for the HDS-10. Which one do I want? As I understand it, they all have internal GPS recievers. Should I still hook the LCG-3000 up to the HDS? can some one outline the connectivity of all the components? I'm trying to get my head around this before I spend a bunch of money. Thanks.

Q - Can the HDS work in a NMEA 2000/ Ether network w/ the current LGC- 3000 and xducer? Are its capabilities and performance advantages diluted by using these older components?
A - It is fully compatible

Q - Will the LMS display the cartography from a Navionics SD card in the HDS? Will it share waypoints and “other stuff”? Will it be able to redraw the (I presume) larger files at a reasonable rate?
A - It will not display charts that are loaded into the HDS unit.

Q - Is it possible/ worth trying to network the engine? I haven’t heard many success stories.
A - There are thousadns of success stories. Its a very straight forward thing to connect. I certainly recommend it.

Q - Is the Icom M302 a capable VHF worth cutting a hole in my console for?
A - I am not a fan, but it is certainly a good, reliable radio.

Q - But it seems that there are a bunch of different SKUs on the BOE site for the HDS-10. Which one do I want? As I understand it, they all have internal GPS recievers.
A - They all have internal gps antennas. You already have a ducer. So I'd recommmend this one - http://www.boemarine.com/000-10543-001_Lowrance_HDS-10_Gen2_Insight_USA_wo_Transducer/

Q - Should I still hook the LCG-3000 up to the HDS? can some one outline the connectivity of all the components? I'm trying to get my head around this before I spend a bunch of money. Thanks.
A- It simply connects with nmea2000. Just need a Lowrance p/n 124-69 to connect it, but you prbably already have these parts in place on the boat with your lms unit.

Thanks for taking the time. Any reason the unit you suggested is more expensive than the one w/ a transducer?

It is a new Gen2 unit and the one you linked to is the older Gen1 unit.
