Going to add another Ford Diesel thread since there aren't enough here...

I'm looking to replace my 05 F150 SCrew FX4 with a newer diesel. Looking at 08-new F250's. Are there any advantages to any newer year diesels? Want to buy used. I know the 08-10 were 6.4L's but wondering if any year was better than another. Thanks

Are you familiar with the newer diesel's extensive emissions equipment? DPF systems, EGR systems, etc. Newer diesels don't get the mileage that the older diesels got. You can delete the DPF and EGR systems and see a substantial mileage boost & overall driveability improvement.

That being said it seems that the 6.4's have had some of the same issues as the 6.0's and some unique to the 6.4 and at that some trucks are gems (as Hullin pointed out) and others lemons.

I am giving serious consideration to legally pursue Ford as my 6.4 has been in the shop 6 times over the last 4 months for the same problem (coolant leak) and it still is not exactly right. I do love the truck and its only had one problem, but that one problem will not go away.. probably not exactly the truck's fault but more due to poor dealer infrastructure and support by Ford. <---- purre speculation but thats been my experience.

I don't think I'd touch one of these trucks regarding purchase if it was out of warranty. Repairs on these trucks can be VERY pricey.

Do yourself a favor and do your homework before you buy.

To answer a bit more of your question from your post... I'd stay away from the 08 6.4's, maybe an 09 or 10. If you could swing it, I'd really take a hard look at the 11 and newer 6.7 diesels. It seems that Ford got a lot figured out with that engine, but it still may be a bit too early to say.

Newer diesels do have a bunch of emissions BS which really kills mileage (6.4) but the newer diesel offerings from all of the big 3 seem to be much more refined, quieter, and very powerful even in stock form.

I was in almost the exact same situation as you. Had an 04 FX4 f150 and sold it. got a 2008 F250 Fx4 crew cab w/ 8in lift with only 26xxx miles on it. I have heard bad things about the first gen 2008s but mine was built on April 2007 (yes it is a 2008) and I am still very happy with my purchase. I have the 100,000 miles warranty left (but voided it with some "modifications"). I am on month 5 now of owning this truck and have had the one major problem I've heard of from everyone owning this truck....bad radiators. I had it replaced by a buddy friend of mine for very cheap and am happy with it still. Have only towed a trailer with 2 quads on it so far, but as expected you couldn't even tell they were there.
I will give you some friendly advice that the DPF/Cat delete and EGR mods did NOT save as much fuel as I expected. I never tested prior to doing it, but now with a superchips programmer and the whole 9 yards on dpf/cat etc, I am seeing about 14mpg city and 14mpg highway. Not sure why it's the same, but just did a trip to NC from Tampa and back and average 14 the whole way. Same as when I'm in the city. I do hand calculations EVERY time and am sure that it's correct. The "lie-o-meter" on the dash says I'm getting 18-22mpg, but obviously I believe my numbers over that. I will say you may get better numbers without an 8in lift or 37in tires on there, but I don't have those numbers to give you. You'll find some people that say they are great.....and some that will undoubtedly have problems. I love mine and can't wait to find the right boat to tow with it and see how it does! Good luck and with diesel expecting to hit over $5.00 a gallon, I bet you can find one for a good price!

Forgot to add....I tested the Dodge and Chevy's around the same year and wasn't a big chevy fan, but liked the dodge a little. I'm a Ford guy, but think that chevy's and Dodges are great trucks too so I don't bash them. The thing that sold me for the ford is the interior was better set up and more comfortable in my opinion than the others. Also, i liked the looks as well. The main selling factor for Ford was the keypad on the drivers side door. I never have to carry my keys on me (until my battery dies and I can't get in my truck)!

This guy ( www.hallasperformance.com ) told me that the 6.4 is a great engine if you get rid of the dpf and egr. Fairly reliable but said there is no such thing a minor engine trouble with the 6.4. They either run forever or else the blow in a big way and completely destroy the motor. He strongly recommended doing a delete on the two items mentioned. After that you can look for an honest mpg improvement of at least 2-3.
One of the trucks he built was on the cover of Diesel Power magazine and you tube is full of videos of his stuff. He knows his diesels, all of them. At his shop last week there were a couple dozen assorted Dodges, Fords and GM's sitting in various states of being built. Call their shop and ask for SCott if you want the straight scoop on any diesel you may be considering.

Can you find a used 2011 6.7? May be above the price point you are trying to keep, and they are still fairly new (but out 1 1/2 + years, I think), but so far I'm very impressed with mine. Power and mileage are great in my experience, leaving DPF, etc., stock. 400 hp and 800 ft pounds of torque will pull a house. Some folks have reported strange shifting with the transmission, but I haven't had those problems and I'm not aware of anything widespread that hasn't been fixed by programming adjustments. My 10,000+ mpg running average is 17.2. I get 21-22 cruising at 60-65 mph. Drops off to 16.5-17 at 75. Very comfortable and easy to drive.

I have a 2008 F250 4x4 w/ 6.4 diesel, I have been very happy with it, (42k miles) tows anything I put behind it and it has been basicly trouble free.... til last week but, the warranty is covering everything and dealer got me a "loaner" so all is good!

I have had:
1- 2004 F250 w/6.0
2- 2006 E350 box trucks w/ 6.0
1- 2007 F250 w/ 6.0
and this 2008 F250 w/ 6.4

All have been great trucks/engines with the 6.4 being my least favorite....

Whatever you get, try to find one with a warranty!

Oops, Guess I dont know how to post a picture...
As of this morning, I am getting a NEW engine! A "fuel system" problem caused #2 and #8 cylinders to run lean causing damage.... Dealer is replacing: Long block, valve train, radiator, intercooler, water pump, and "entire" fuel system.

Thank goodness for warranty!

had an 08 F350 with 6.4.. 2 thumbs down if I had a third thumb it would be down as well.
Be ready to dump a lot of fuel into that pig, its kinda like the old OX66's those 6.4's drink the fuel. Towing forget about it... I mean they can pull down a house but you better keep the fuel hose in the tank for the entire ride. I got 6.5 MPG towing a 31 CH from Tampa to CH's shop in the panhandle. If we were going down a small hill it bumped up to 7ish MPG.
Empty just driving around town 11-12 MPG and Highway under 70 MPH under 2000 RPM I would see 15-16 MPG. True numbers... unless you void the warranty and chip it that is what you will be working with

I recently got a 2011 6.7 F250 and love it. I am coming out of a 2005 duramax and also loved that truck but it is no comparison to the 6.7. I avg 15-16 running around town normally. Last week I decided to reset the comptuer for a 50 mile trip a couple of counties over. I drove exactly 55mph and exactly 70mph on high ways and when i pulled off the exit ramp just before getting into town I looked down to see an avg of 21.2mpg. I know the computer isnt 100% accurate but none the less I was impressed!

only get a 6.4 if you are willing to tune and modify it, which will void your warranty. As mentioned, stock, the 6.4 is a fuel hog

get spartan tuned and deleted

My Dad's stock '08 does pull quite good, I'll admit. Maybe even a little better than my lightly tuned '03 duramax. Due to more than just HP I'm sure. BUT, as has been stated, horrible economy.
I will say this though, just got my new Diesel Power, those 6.4's can be made to put out a TON of HP & TRQ!!

I just traded my 08 F450 for a 12 F450 last night, had 57K miles on it and was almost out of powertrain warranty. Same basic trucks, loaded 4x4 crew cab DRW with 4.30 gears and automatic transmissions. On the ~40 mile trip to the dealership, my 08 F450 got 11.3 mpg in city/country driving (no interstate). On the exact same route home, the 12 F450 got 15.3 mpg. While the fuel savings won't make up for a couple extra years of truck payments, that's a significant mileage difference no matter how you slice it. Also, the 12 F450 is much quieter (hard to believe, the 08 was much quieter than my 01) and doesn't have a hint of turbo lag like the 08 did. When you press down on the pedal, the truck moves out smartly. I was very happy with my 08 F450 but I can already tell that I'm going to be even happier with this 12 F450, back to full warranty again and 4 more mpg means roughly another 100 miles between fill ups!

13.5 mpg towing 37 foot fifthwheel
15.5 towing 22 foot hydrasport

never towed over 65 mph
slow down, it will save you money!

I have a 08 f250 my figures are dead on with guy above 109 thousand miles and only repair is a erg valve just this year. Great truck pulls anything you can hook behind it. Mine towing a 31 contender above 65 will get 12.5

get a cummins, way too many problems with the 6.4, i guess that'd be the reason why they only made them for two years, cuz they suck.

but if you want to go fast and dump tons of money in it, its a pretty fast truck.

cummins isnt exactly bulletproof, and isnt what it used to be with all the emissions crap now.

the 6.4 has its share of problems too

Ford had been working on the 6.7 for 4 years, and the emissions are the reason for the short life of the 6.4. Yeah radiators are that trucks weakness, but if you believe there has never been a lemon cummins, then you need one:trout:

I had a 08 6.4l f350 dually with the tow boss package and that was the absolute best tow rig I have ever sat behind the wheel of. I cannot even begin to tell you how nice it was towing a load. I towed everything from a mini excavator to a 24' enclosed car hauler. The most I towed was around 18k, but I pulled my 14' dump trailer around the most. It was a pure pleasure to pull.

Now for the bad- it blew the turbos at around 80k miles.

I switched back to a 800ft-lbs cummins with a srw and it has more get up and go but it isn't the same sitting behind the wheel with a load behind it.
