I met Capt. Brant McMullen and his father at the Saltwater Sportsman seminar in Bolivia last saturday. They had set up a booth and were selling t-shirts to raise money to attempt to pass legislation to ban commercial pogey netting in NC territorial waters. I was not aware of the huge problem of out of state net boats and their high tech purse seining of entire pods of menhaden as they pass through our coastal waters. They use spotter planes to locate the huge schools of pogies, send the net boats in and literally wipe out the school. Most of these net boats operate or are owned by a company in Texas. The only remaining states on the eastern seaboard where this practice is not banned are Virginia and NC. "Save Our Pogies" is a grass roots effort to raise monies to lobby our legislators to enact laws to prevent the further raping of our coastal waters by these out of state net boats. 100 % of the funds collected will be used to conduct mail outs, advertising and lobbying. A very worthy cause for anyone who cares about maintaining a primary food source for most of our offshore and inshore game fish. Donations can be made to :

I have no connection with this organization, other than being a contributor myself. Wiley, I hope this doesn't step on anyones toes, but I feel it is a most important issue

This has been a big issue around ocean isle for a few years now. You can really tell a difference when you're trying to find pogies after these boats have been in the waters. Not to mention the affect it has on the food chain.
