Popped my back in the gym.... This dumb ass didnt warm up and hit the squat machine... On the way down heard a loud pop...
Closest I have ever been to crying on an injury... Seriously..
Long story short - a very pretty latina with a nose piercing asked me to drop my pants and I did without hesitation
2 shots right is the azz..... :nono:

Depends on the severity of your injury and the potential for healing. I've had cortisone shots (or similar) in my knees, elbows, shoulders and back. Sometimes they only last about three days, sometimes the joint won't give me trouble until I trash it again. Best of luck!

Squats are the worst for you - Do an alternative Dumbbell version with 40-50 pounds in each hand and do high reps. Much safer. As far as the shots, I've had them in my elbows and they made me feel strange...but they helped the paid for about 2-3 weeks and allowed the injury to heal.

Why would Dumbbell squats be safer than barbell squats?

It is not a natural movement to put 250 pound on a bar across your back and bend a bit and squat. Hard on knees and it compresses your lower back. Very easy to get hurt. Holding 2 small dumbbells is lower impact. It is common to get hurt at the gym while doing squats. I like lunges, and 1 legged raised lunges also. An hour on the escalator machine will do wonders for your legs as well. If you are going to do it, do it right and not on a machine.... always light weight high reps if you're prone to back injury

The shots won't really kick in for a day or 2. It's a steroid. You're gonna feel real good tomorrow and may even get a little bit of euphoria and increased energy. Might wanna take a little sleep aid tonight too, could keep you up.

Thats an epidural - I would go to a specialist for that - too close to the spine :o
Today was just to alleviate the immediate pain and add an anti inflammatory ...
If it doesnt get better then its an MRI and possible epidural...
Feels great now - should be interesting day at the horse track tomorrow

Exercising will eventually kill you....so I avoid it to live longer.
I had cortisone shot into my ac joint. The cortisone worked well for a few weeks, the numbing shot they gave me before the cortisone shot caused me to pass out....seriously. That was an odd day at the doctors office.

A good straight bar squat is maybe the hardest lift to maintain proper form. Takes a lot of focus, especially when slapping the plates on. Not all gyms have them but a leverage squat machine is by far the most comfortable and safe way I've ever done squats. It similar and sometimes the same as a calf raise machine. Sets your heels lower than toes and, unlike a smith machine, it articulates through the motion perfectly keeping your hips, lower back and knees in position. You would almost have to try to do it wrong. Uses regular plates as well and because the movement feels so natural and focuses all the load on the thighs and rear you can go heavy safely and without a spotter.

Until I hit 40 I felt like I could go on forever hitting the gym 3 - 4 nights a week using a rower and stepper for cardio every other day.
In my early 50's and I come up lame at least 3 or 4 times a year. Monday night on the pullup rack I pulled a muscle in my clavicle right side never happened before. Tonight I could'nt get thru one set of dumbell curls.
It really sucks. I see these young guys in the gym and wish I could keep up. Gains are nil to none recovery time is much longer injury is much more frequent especially after layoffs - long 2 week vacations then starting back. My body lets me know real quick.
I use a heart rate monitor to let me know how much cardio and lifting I have been doing with the software provided (allows me to keep track) it helps but it does'nt replace 30 years of wear and tear.
When some of these things started happening more frequently years ago my physician broke in down in to reality. She said the average male peaks at 20 and all facilities sight, smell, strength, endurance, stamina, testosorone and all else diminish by 1% per year.
Bottom line it sucks getting older.
Back to the rower for a week or so.

I experienced a similar "pop" while doing squats a few years ago. after a few weeks of terrible pain and barely being able to get out of bed, walk, have sex, etc. I had an MRI which showed 3 bulging disks in my lumbar region. my neurologist gave me an LESI and told me to NEVER do squats again. he said they put more stress on the lower back than any other excercise.

watch yourself...the good feeling you get can make you forget youve got an irritation and injury...the tendancy is to play because you feel good...then when the shots wear off you find out why you should have taken it easy...

It relay depends what your goals are. Squats done with proper form are not going to lead to the injuries you describe. The key is to use proper form, and don't increase weight if you can't maintain form. Need to learn from someone who knows what they are doing. Squatting is one of the most natural movements there is.
Here is a good example of proper squatting

Stay away from squats at your age unless there very light.
I lifted heavily from 17-30. Bench 440, squat 515, etc... The only thing I have to show for it at 41 are a completely wafer flat L4 and L5 disk from high spinal compression exercises. Squats, dead lifts and military presses.

I agree - I am 40, I weigh 185 bench about 275, - the best workouts are higher intensity lots of reps medium weight with little rest, lots of pull ups, pushups to keep heart rate up..... no need to Squat 500 pounds and see results on an MRI - I have Ruptured and bulging disks and manage the pain via exercise and stretch. Although lately my Sciatic nerve is out of control.

Light weight, high repetitions is bad advice for someone who is prone to injury. That type of lifting leads to high speed, careless or sloppy form. If you are prone to injury, no matter the body part, warm up, stretch, take your time and listen to your body.

One has nothing to do with the other. Warming up and Stretching are independent of the workout. If you are prone to injury you should avoid anything that aggravates it all together. As far as "sloppy form" that argument can be made for anything.

I had a cortisone shot straight up the heel of my foot. The shot was very painful. After the initial shot the pain went away for 2-3 days and it was back. For most of my ailments now I go see a chiropractor. I can go from barely being able to walk straight from back pain to playing golf in a couple days!!
