newbe here.... and I'm throwing out a wide net in hopes of learning about a kind of boat and boating that are new to me. I live in the frozen north and have recently bought a place on pine island in SW Florida. For a few more years I will only be able to be there a few months a year but the plan is to spend half the year in the future. I must admit I know nothing about salt water, tides, shallow water nor the boats suited to them. I,ve lurked here and other sites for a while and know just enough to be dangerous.

Here is where I am...I want a simple boat that will go shallow for fishing and exploring but also carry four adults to the beach a few times a year. Most of the time I will fish alone. I don't want to always have to think about how much it will cost to run. So i would like keep hp as low as practical for fuel efficiency.

A couple of the boats I have been dreaming about recently include Panga Marine 18 skiff and Privateer 16 bay boat. Neither of these boats ever seem to come up for sale used but in their simplest forms, probably tiller, they may be in my price range.

I would appreciate any thoughts on these boats or other recomendations.

Skiffs and other light, shallow deadrise boats give you the best efficiency for a given boat length. Offshore deep deadrise boats will handle waves much better but are not as economical to run as a skiff. Lots of items in boating are a tradeoff.
