Hi Andy,

I've got a 2011 F150TXR with around 20-25 hours on it. It's running the 17-M 14-1/4 Yamaha Reliance prop that I think is rubber hubbed. In gear, at idle, I get noticeable chatter 70% of the time. Can you point me in the right direction on where to start to correct this? Ken at Pgods can sell me a prop and torq IV hub, but he indicated the prop I'm running should be chatter free. Thanks in advance for your help...

Nevermind,

At what rpm is it doing this at? If you increase the rpms does it go away? What kind of boat is this on?

Hi Andy,

It's on a Pioneer 197 Sportfish and happens right at idle. IF the on-board yamaha tach is correct, that is around 500-600 rpms and 1-2 mph in calm seas. Again, IF the tach is right, it goes away just above idle at around 750 rpms and 3-4 mph, same sea conditions, GPS measured.

Sounds like drive shaft bounce. Have you replaced the water pump lately?

It's a brand new motor, it just went past the 20 hour mark.

Alrighty then.

Why is the engine idling at 500 plus rpms? The recommended idle speed is 700 plus or minus 50. If your engine is idling below 600, that might have something to do with it.

Ask your dealer if they did a sync and link setup on the engine before you picked it up. If its not idling as smooth as it could be, that would cause the drive shaft bounce, which sounds like a prop chatter to you.

Smaller 4 cylinder Yamaha's like the F50-F60 and F70 are really prone to it. We see this on pontoon boats on occasion with aluminum props.

It actually sounds like one of those rock polishers we used to run as kids. Remember the little playdoh size drum that rode on those rubber wheels?

At idle, the tach needle is exactly 1/2 between 1000 and 0 rpms, so I'm calling that 500 rpms. I'll have it over at the Yamaha shop next week and ask them to check the sync and link setup along with the idle. I hope it's as simple as that! The motor/boat/prop combo will hit a very nice 5950 rpms and will do around 47 gps mph, so I think I'm very, very, very close to perfection.

thank you for your input!!!

Dave
