Boats in Salem, MA. Tired of doing vinyl every few years, looks cheap too. Hand painted will last longer and it will look nicer, like the boat was intended to look.

The material used to make decals is the key. High quality stuff will outlast a painted name, cheap stuff....well you alread know that answer. Take a look at some of the gold leaf, digital work out there today and you may change your mind. The technolgy has come a long way.

I've spent the money on vinyl, it lasts at least 5 years. I'm ok with that. Not crazy about the way it looks. My feeling is vinyl doesn't belong on a Bertram. Time to go back to a more original, traditional look.

There's some good info. in this thread. I'm in the business, and if you're having to re-letter every 5 years it's NOT high performance vinyl that's being used. Nothing else should be used for a marine environment. Some people want hand lettering though, and there are a few folks in the area still doing that. It can be a real bear to remove when/if needed. Take a look at the gallery pics on most sign shop websites. I'd be surprised if you didn't see some very sweet gold leaf lettering that would look great on the transom of a Bert.

My sister is a sign painter and has done a few boats. she's an incredable artist and could do what your asking very nicely. probably VERY reasonably also. she lives in Revere,so it'd be close. PM if you would like me to ask her if she's interested in the job.

Oven Cleaner (spray) works great.

Tom Howell of T. Howell Lettering & Signs in Newbury is one of the few old school guys who still paints just about everything by hand. He is very talented but sometimes is overseas working on unrelated projects, so he can be hard to get a hold of.
