All great guitarists. The funniest list I ever saw was for drummers, it had the usual list of names Bonham, Grohl, Smith, etc....

The end of the list had a "note" that said this was a list of all time great drummers and Neal Peart was intentionally left off as he is his own list.

This list always causes an uproar on all kinds of forums. It's so subjective, for example i'm a shred/ progressive fan and this is what my list would look like. In no order;
Yngwie - I know, but you cant deny his talent and influence.
Petrucci
Paul Gilbert
Guthrie Govan
Andy timmons
Andy James
Andy Wood
Vinnie Moore
Marco Sfogli
Nuno Bettencourt
I guess I have to stick EVH in there too.

A more agreeable list would probably be the worst players of all time.

You can't put 100 guitarists in a list in order of greatness and expect anyone to agree with it. The only thing the list does is sell magazines and the magazine knows that so take the list for what it's worth.

Robby Krieger of the Doors is a phenomenal guitarist.

I don't think many of the rock guitarists can hold their own up against the art-rock guitarists when it comes to playing "lyrically". There is so much more too it than just speed.

Steve Howe of Yes.
David Gilmore of Pink Floyd
Steve Hackett of Genesis
Daryl Struemer of Genesis
Steve Hillage of Gong

Probably not two people here that even know who Andy Latimer is. Anyone that has 9-mins and 41-secs to spare can see him play here:

I couldn't find Sonny Landreth. wth?

“He’s probably the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced.” – Eric Clapton

"...Warren Haynes opines that Sonny is “nothing less than truly great. … He has a unique slant on slide-guitar playing, in that he has come up with some different tunings and ways of playing them that give him his own voice.”

Their seats were taken by abba.

No Son House?He taught R.Johnson.

No Lowell George?

Who can name the lead guitarist for abba? Do they even have one?

Since this is so subjective I will introduce Chet Atkins and Roy Clark. Not RR but guitar players I bet most on the list studied. Both were excellant. Keith Richards simply had some of the best riffs I have ever heard. John McEuen of Nitty Gritty problably the best string player ever. Country oriented opion but coming of age in the 70's I know both genres.

One of SRV's favorites was a guy named Dave Gonzalez who played in a great SoCal rockabilly band called The Paladins. He may not have sold as many records as those on the RS top ten but he is more proficient than half of the players on that list.

Future great to keep an eye on. Quinn Sullivan. Saw him for the first time a couple of years ago at a Buddy Guy show. At the time he was 8 or so years old. I was blown away. Lots of clips of him on you tube. Utterly amazing to play like that so young. Clearly a natural.

Lake plays both bass and guitar. That brings up the need for a definition of what is meant by "greatest". There area some phenomenal flamenco guitarists and fado guitarists. If you have the time, Google search "youtube greatest guitarist" and watch some of the classical guitarists.

I wholly disagree! He opened for BB King when he was 12 years old!! BB King said his potential was beyond anyone he has ever seen. With 17 solo albums plus the Back Country Communion album he has proven himself 10 fold. White boy can play the blues!
