That is a local kid that caught it. The location where he caught it is where at the marina where they do ship shape TV (American).

Although the trophy was impressive, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials say there have been bigger catches. The longest gator in Florida was more than 14 feet and the heaviest more than 1,000 pounds.
The biggest gator the family had caught to date was 400 pounds.
"I am going to try and catch a bigger one, that's all you can do," said Tim.
No, what you can do is not engage in trophy hunting. Got a gator problem? ... kill a gator. Hungry? ... kill a gator. Wanna kill something big? ... think again.
There is a thought process that suggests big animals are big for two reasons; one is the environment supports the animal's growth, and the other is the animal's genes. Killing the big gators removes the big-gator genes from the gene pool. What you are left with is small gators.

There are plenty of 10'+ Gators around here. That gator is probably 50-60 yrs old ... and call me crazy but I'm going out on a limb and guessing... he's not a virgin. I'm just fine around them 5-6' 'er's but that is a dangerous animal, and I for one am glad he's gone.
Just for the record... gators never quit growing until they're dead.

I never understood the whole gene thing unless you are talking about future offspring the croc could have had. Any babies from that croc to-date would carry the so called big croc gene. So killing a 5 to 6 footer that may have been an offspring of that croc is just as damaging as killing the big one. They just didn't have time to mature to the size of their parent.
Am i missing something? ;?

That's it, and you are correct. I think the idea is that a large animal, if allowed to reproduce, will have many offspring with the large-critter gene. Some will make it to maturity and reproduce, some won't. Kill a large critter and you erase any potential future large-critter gene from that animal, from that time forward.
It also happens in reverse. Everyone knows the 150-200 lb dog breed Great Dane. Not many folks know it was originally a much smaller dog about the size of a lab. The larger size dogs with the big-critter gene would randomly show up. Everyone wanted the freak big-critter gene Danes so they were selectively bred, and the original, normal-size Great Dane gene slid into oblivion about 100-years ago. Or not. I guess it is possible a Great Dane will be born with a recessive gene dominating and it only grows to be "normal" size.

Now that shows the father son love I was always looking for from my father. I never had a gator head in my bedroom.
