thats a shame. I just don't understand it. the driver of the boat was a put in bay resident. you'd think he'd be familiar with the waters. sad sad sad.

Very sad. Known the capt for years, he's a great guy with years of experience. No alcohol involved. Heard he mistook the green light on the entrance of Ballast Is docks for green light on bouy off NE side of Ballast Is. Light rain and darkness must have disoriented him.

Could have happened to any of us. Very sad day on the water.

If I'm correct Ballast Island sits maybe 3 feet out of the water at best. It has like a couple small bushes on it and that's it. I can see how he hit that. It's like a shoal barely above the water, right? My condolences to the friends and family.

I think you're thinking of Starve Is on the south side of South Bass. Ballast Island is about 12 acres and has three private homes and a small marina. It's located on the NE side of South Bass.

Releaserman, there is a little island just to the south and west of ballast island. We call it lost ballast, there is a red nun close by it.

If he did indeed mistake the green marina entrance light on Ballast for the channel light, He also missed the red flashing light on the other side of the entrance. It has been a bad year for accidents on the lake that is for certain.

You have to watch the store, if you don't this is the kind of thing that happens.

Travelling by night is indeed dangerous. With all the summer storms we have had the Lake is littered with floating trees and tree limbs. I am not a night boater for that reason.

This tree I previously posted on this forum is still stuck in the water at it's original place earlier this year.
