Fish that size would be a baby and spook really quick. Had that been a 20'er then even a basker has enough mouth to make the turd burgular disappear.
People grab onto whale sharks and I have seen 2 different people one that put a white in catonic while in the water. Don't know if he is still among us though. And another that free swims with them and grabs the dorsal of the white as it passes. You have to understand the communication that the animals are giving you. Would I do it no because that whole carma thing would come back to haunt me from my youth. Can you tell yes. Most are bluffing and can tell by the dilation of you eye if visible. They also may be able to tell from scent that you left in your drawers:grin:

I think everybody is missing the big picture, ITS A BASKING SHARK!! Watch shark week for crying out loud there harmless. In Mexico they get $150 to ride a basking shark for 2 minutes. This guy did exactly what I would of done. The people who think he's an ahole are either to old to do it or are afraid of nothing. I hope I can get the opportunity to do the same but I wouldn't publicize it because thats how things get banned.
