The Boating Forum - 27' Phoenix FIshbuster

I am in the process of puschasing a 1983 27' Phoenix "Fishbuster" with twin 1999 OX66 Yamaha 225 HP with aprox 160 Hrs (the engs) since new. I see that they are about 10' beam and 22 degrees deadrise at the transom. Does anyone have any experience with this boat in the outboard configuration?

A few years back when I was shopping for my current boat I looked at a 27' Pheonix Fishbuster. I really liked the layout but the one I looked at was a straight inboard with twin Crusader 5.7 liter engines. I was told by the owner that he cruised at 18-20 knots. That killed my interest right there. Have no idea what kind of cruise you'll get out of twin outboards. Never actually took her for a run but sure looked like it could handle some water.

I believe you might find the 27/28 ft Albemarle a better offshore boat if that is what you are looking for. Lots of older ones for sale at decent prices.

Thanks for the input. I found some information from the dealer "Phoenix Yacht Sales" (Phoenix is no longer in production) the powerboat guide says 21 degrees but I have factory information which states that the deadrise is actually 22 degrees at the transom and it is a Jim Wynne designed hull. Solid fiberglass, bonded inner liner and hull to deck joint. A serious deep V tank - will do 40 kt with the 250 OB's. The cockpit space is unreal. Comes with a pipewelders half tower and a Pompanette chair and fishbox. Will post pics when / if it happens. :thumbsup:
Albemarle is a sweet rig though. Dont want to spend that much

I looked at one of them over the summer here in southern New Jersey. It had a pair of 2003 Yammie HDPI 200's and the owner was looking for $40K. The boat had seen some rough times and I did not like the fiberglass outboard well. It took up a great deal of room in the back of the cockpit, which was all wasted when the engines were tilted down. In addition, this boat had loose floor sections and the outboard well needed to be resecured to the deck. Needless to say, I think that it is still for sale at $40K, new engines or not. Book vaule was about $21K. Despite it's worn appearance, it did seem like a nice big roomy boat and shoudl cruise at 23 knots with the 200's.

That's a sweet boat, solid tank w/ good fishing room for that kind of boat.

This is not the old style with the "cut out" but new style with a "Stainless Marine bracket" It has over 115 Sq ft of unobstructed cockpit space right up to the helm, in excellent condition. Will be buying from original owner who kept it at "Ocean Reef Club" in Key Largo. Will be keeping this boat @ my condo which is in a marina in Puerto Aventuras, MX so I dont want to spend $80K for a GW Marlin, Pursuit, etc.... WIll post pics ASAP :thumbsup: :grin:

CHECK THE MOTORS - If in 5 years of use, the owner has only used them 30hrs per year? Have a Yamaha certified mechanic verify that. I think in 1999, they could plug in and tell engine hours. 40K is an ok price IF those motors are as 'Cherry' as they sound. If not, you're looking at 30K more to repower. I like the Phoenx layout. Yes, I am having the Yamaha dealer who installed them new in 2000 and has been servicing them, do a "re-comission" and service. Not sure if you can pull hours from a '99 OX66 225, I'll ask though. ;?

Have an accepted offer on this boat, and it is going to (hull) survey this week, followed by a full re-comissioning, and engine check out by the Original Yamaha dealer. :o

Survey(S) turned out great! Will close deal tomorrow!

My good friend just bought a 1983 phoenix fishbuster with twin 350 crusaders this past summer its what they call a pocket drive, great boat its got a solid fiberglass hull from waterline down no wood great offshore boat, theres a guy here on long island who writes for the long island fisherman with a 1978 same boat with twin suzuki 225 or 250 4 strokes dont remeber and goes 75-90 miles offshore with it on a regular basis,

Yes, this company (Phoenix) really built some great hulls. They made the 31 Combi for Blackfin from '93-'95. I have been looking for a clean 27' like this one for over a year. :thumbsup:

I've got a '79 inboard model I've had since '92. I repowered with Cummins 6BTs. great ride, lots of fishing room. Good Island hopper for the Bahamas and Dry Tortugas.

I have a neighbor who has one with Volvo diesels, he's thinking of selling.

There's an outboard model without engines on trailer at a local marina. Don't know if it's for sale, but it's been sitting on trailer there for over 9 months.

I can check either one out if you're interested. They are both earlier models.

Thanks, They're not fancy, but built very well and have good design (Jim Wynne) and hardware. (Phoenix built the 31' combi for Blackfin) :grin:

Congrats..nice boat, classic lines and well built. Phoenix built the late model (1991) 31 Northcoast for Northcoast before they went bellyup. Then Northcoast sold the molds etc. to Blackfin who built it and called it the 31 Combi. I didn't know that Phoenix built the 31 Combi for Blackfin.

Either way the fishbuster is a great boat. :thumbsup:
