Is it just just or is good service gone? Did this happen slowly and I just noticed. It used to to be that you could complain to the owner or a manager and they would at least pretend to care.
Last month I had a bad experience with marine mechanic, so I tried another... even worse. Never have an answer and never call you back when they say they will.
So today I was on the phone with the owner of the second marina who basically told be that they adjusted the shift cable "as good as it gets" and I need to come get the boat.
After that call I went to out to pick up the dog from the groomers. On the way I stopped at the pharmacy and picked up some tooth paste, mouthwash and floss. I paid at the counter and the cashier told me to have a nice day. So I looked at items, still on the counter. Then looked at her. She stared back at me for a moment. Then I asked had her to put the stuff in a bag. Which she did after what I can only describe as a grunt.
Ok, off to the groomers. Pick up the Dog after his bath and brush. He jumps in the Jeep, I pat him and all kinds of hair comes off on my hand. So much for the brush.
I just don't get it. If I treated my customers this way they would leave. I know most of my competitors do a good job also. Why is it so common to have sucky service in the "service sector"?
OK rant over.

It's our fault as consumers......we all are just too damn willing to acquiesce to horrible service and not say a thing.
How many times have we pulled through the Mickie D's drive through to WAIT for our food.
Was not the entire premise so that we did not have to wait?
Man, you touched a very major nerve for me.
I am totally in agreement, when it comes to B2B we cannot service customers that way, we would be out.

Asking to bag the items bugs me too. It's got to be a money thing. Every bag costs the store money. Bosses must tell the cashiers "don't use the bags unless the customer asks for it". I now ask for a bag even it would be just a tootbrush!!
I tell the cashier to stuff the bag or bring my own. But I hear ya, people are not very happy generally and it spills over into their work.

Got you all beat. Pay 650 dollars on a full tank of fuel, and have to pay 1.75 for a cup of coffee after spending that much at a truck stop.....
BUT.... Deliver to the dealerships, usually there at one of them every morning and get free coffee and muffins or doughnuts. Don't have to buy a thing....

Not in America.
Went to Wally World the other day...I walk in through the doors and as expected, there stands the greeter. Hmmmm....interesting...it's a *20-something, heavyset, black girl* - not the usual "senior" lady that looks like everyone's grandma we usually have here. Girl is leaning against some shelves of peanut butter, or Igloo coolers, or whatever, with her right arm held lazily out. Stuck to the end of her index finger (middle finger would've been more appropriate) is an infamous smiley sticker. No words, no sound, no eye contact, no nothing except a look on her face and body language that said, "if any of you a-holes want a sticker, come and get it cause I'm sure as hell not wasting my precious time and energy on you". I just sighed to myself and went about looking for Pennzoil Marine.
* 20-something, heavyset, black, girl* could easily have been *34 year old, thin, white, guy, who still lives with Mom* My point is, a lot of people don't give a $hit anymore.

If you can't work and make a living anymore in America, which I believe is true for a good percentage of the population, then why bother. I believe that's how many people think today. They feel know matter how hard they work they won't be able to live a midddle class lifestyle. It used to be that you didn't have to go to college to live in the middle class. Now you do. Civil servant jobs are few and far between, and manufacturing is gone. I'm not sure I blame them. I'd be pissed too.

If the manager of any of those businesses were to get a series of complaints or letters stating the same or similar dissatisfaction, things would change, one or two won't be enough...........BUT.............there will be no series of complaints or letters to the managers, it will continue to be tolerated, and we will continue to be treated this way and all of us will continue to witness the decline of America.

I called a business today and got the standard phone message that said: If you know the ext. you are trying to reach you can press it now. For a list of people you don’t know press 1 now. When you listen to a bunch of names of people you don’t know press 3 and you can start this crap all over again and hang up pissed.
Ok, maybe it wasn’t in those exact words, but that’s how I heard it. When I hung up I told my secretary if she ever hears me suggest we let a machine talk to customers, trick me to get in the doggy style position so you can kick me square in the teeth.

The true measure on ones character is how one acts when no one is watching.
In today's world, not only do people do stuff that would not have been thought about 10 years ago, they film it then put it on the internet for EVERYONE to see and it can NEVER be taken back!
Like I said before, there is no shame any more.
Everything must be acceptable to/by everyone and don't you dare speak up against someone's actions no matter how outrageous (or simply impolite) it may seem.

No - People don't give a crap. The sense of entitlement that is everywhere is just insane. People think that everyone has a right to own a house, it is right to have access to credit, healthcare, job, benefits, etc. Americans no longer think they need to work for anything.
My grandmother just turned 96, and sometimes is very coherent with an amazing memory. The first person history lesson is amazing. My grandfather was Irish living in Boston, she Norwegian. She can offer perspective on nothing...There were times when they did not eat when they were young in the 30's. They did no own a house until they could pay cash for it when they had 4 kids and were in their 30's (my other grandfather built his house with just him and his brother). My grandfather literally dug graves and worked on a road crew part time. They made it big when my grandfather finally got a full time job in the 50's as a security job. About a year ago my father found a box with $25k in cash in her closet. She had been saving a "few dollars" per week for some time, so she could by food for the family if things got hard. The funny thing is that looking at pictures and talking to her, they were very privileged and lived a great life. Her stories always end with a smile and a "we were fortunate".
I guess that was a bit of a rant, but some perspective. America used to be people that were happy to have the opportunity. America is a land of equal opportunity, not a land of all should be equal.

WOW, the above statement says it all about the way people think these day's. I have some news for everone, America is THE ONLY place where a hard working individual who is a go getter can make it just fine! Where does this belief system come from with regards to hard work? The answer is......the Public School System!
ThreeLittleFish
06-29-2011, 11:58 PM
I'm not sure it comes from the public school system. I think it comes from parenting.
I own a contracting business and we work very hard to keep a customer happy. As a consumer, here's how I handle things.
Citibank decides to raise my interest rate from 7% to 29.99% because I MISSED a payment one month. I point out I made 18 payments in 12 months, have no balance and spent $30,000. The month in question, I made two payments the previous month and the last one was for the " missing" payment. Does no good even when I talk to a manager. So card is now in safe and I have a new Cabela's card at 9.9%.
Btw, first month of Cabela's card their securrity system shut off my card by mistake. I call annoyed and young girl tells me it happens. I ask for manager and tell of my dissapointment with them. He gives me 600 points on my card and apologizes. I am happy and card is still used.

Managers are afraid to manage for fear of retaliation from either the employee or upper management for making waves.
Or they go about it in the wrong way. Upper management does not want to be bothered any longer and its not a matter of right or wrong. Thats what I see has really changed. Got to Calif last week pulling Pasha, military cars and picked up a load on their yard. Jump box was dead and so was the car I had to jump and we can't move cars jumping another one. Pasha service truck two rows down airing up a tire, I walked over there as ask if he could pull around I had cables and jump a car off for me. In Pasha yard now,,, picking up one of their cars and the reply I got was thats not my job. I don't do that. Opened the hood of the car in front of mine and jumped it off. Several e mails hit the company before I got out of San Diego and a phone call... LOL Was not suppose to do that but after putting the Carolina boys thoughts on the whole bunch I really think they understand now I didn't care.. Unions have got things so screwed up as to being helpful and its not this ones job to do this or that they have lost sight of the whole picture but we remind them with a snap shot once in a while.
Thought you would enjoy this one. Filled up in Mebane NC early this morning and they were cleaning the floors. Big orange triangle like cones kinda placed on the floor with writing on it. Yes. Where would you like it delivered? ;)
I usually receive good service. One thing that I make a habit of doing is being patient in line and smiling and joking a little (mostly just being friendly) with the service person. I have owned restaurants and have seen and experienced how staff can be treated. Sometimes you get what you give, sometimes not. In bar/restaurant situations I tip well for good service. It is an investment for the next trip.
The fish rots from the head down, and 90% of all communication

Maybe we just don't notice when we do get good service, and honestly, it happens all the time with me. And I appreciate it. I used to be a customer service manager for a big mortgage company, and it is hard to tell people their payments are going up because the insurance companies and taxes have gone up. I became attuned to people who give a sh*t! When it happens, whether it's a smile and a thank you at Publix, or the cashier chasing you in the parking lot b/c you forgot a bag......go find the manager, and tell them you appreciate the extra attitude. You'll feel good about it, it helps the employee and it's FREE!!!!

I wanted an empty soda cup (for water) one time at a store X and they wanted to charge me for the cost of a filled soda. So I said, "If the empty cup is the same price then the soda is actually free, right?"
They just looked at me confused.

Nope. Some marine mechanics are the worst. (Some not all)
I called a local Mobile marine mechanic. He does not have a shop. He works from his truck so I thought he would be the right guy for the job. I had installed a pair of rebuilt injection pumps on my Volvo's about a year ago and timed them after the install.
While reading the boatdiesel forum, I decided I would have a professional mechanic check/adjust the timing and wanted him to check out a couple of other items.
I called him and after telling him where the boat was (about 25 mile one way) he proceeds to tell me he's too busy, the job is too far away and has regular customers he wants to service.
I didn't ask him to do the job immediately. I told him I wasn't in a hurry. I didn't tell him I wouldn't pay travel time.
I told him I wish I had become a diesel mechanic so I could pick and choose my customers. I asked him what was wrong with my cash.
He got pissed off and hung up on me.
Only in the marine world do guys like this exist.
In the end, I got my tools, drove to the boat and checked the timing on both pumps myself. Found one was off by .1 mm. Reset the timing and all is good. I guess he saved me $500.00.

I guess that's one way to look at it. The think is, in his opinion the 25 mile drive was too far to go even if he's earning his $110.00 hourly rate. No way I will ever become a regular customer since it's too far to drive.
Maybe I could move my boat two harbors up the coast so it could be nice and close to his house. Then he could sleep late, yawn a few times, think of going to work, change his mind a few times and then head out the door by noon.
In this economy I don't know of anyone who is turning away business especially business that is only 30 minutes away and pays cash.

I called him and after telling him where the boat was (about 25 mile one way) he proceeds to tell me he's too busy, the job is too far away and has regular customers he wants to service.
Around Easter, I got my lawn re-sodded and did some landscaping. I finally decided to bite the bullet and call a lawn service, so of course I called the guy who does my 2 neighbors houses. Takes me a week to get ahold of him on the phone, he says he'll come take a look. Finally another week later (after both my neighbors get mowed) I call him back, he gives me a bunch of attitude about how the lawn is overgrown, how much more work my lawn will be than my neighbors, how he has regular customers to take care of, and how he doesn't really have time to deal with me unless I am going to be a long term customer, etc etc.
I don't have patience to deal with this s--- and usually would have told him to go you know where, but for whatever reason I bit my tongue and said "no problem, I'll be a long term customer, let's just get this going."
Well that was easter. They've been mowing my lawn every couple of weeks. Apparently the jackass was so busy, he forgot to add me to his billing system. :)

Went to Wally World the other day...
Workers at my local Wally World talk with each other and walk down the aisles like they own it. They won't even get out of the way for customers! I know most retailers hire from the local pool, which tells you what direction my neighborhood is heading. I first moved into this neighborhood in 1977 which then was a very quiet suburb.
Oh, back to the subject, I needed a new axle for my second trailer so called the old local trailer shop a couple of cities away to order one. Phone just rings and no one answers. Tried several more times with no luck. This isn't the first time. So, called a trailer manufacturer in the next county over and they had one in stock! Took a nice leisurely drive.

Now, that's a happy ending. Don't tell your neighbors about your good fortune.

I don't get it. I rarely experience the things mentioned on this thread. I find that the vast majority of people I meet are kind, caring and considerate. As a matter of fact downright pleasant. Sure there's the occasional episode but life is to short.

So where do you live that the world is so much different and better?
Just today at Wally World the cashier threw two can goods on top of the eggs I purchased. I walked straight over to the customer service desk and spoke with the manager about my frustration. Also gave her some ideas on teaching her cashiers on how to say thank you to the cusotmer. Odds that nothing will improve because the average worker today does not understand that without the customer they have no job.
In other words most of them don't give a sh-t. Its not just at Wal-Mart its everywhere.
Several weeks bacl the wife and I stop at Mickey D's for a milk shake. After driving awayfrom the drive-through window I quickly I realized I had recieved a cup of milk. Parked the truck walked inside and informed the young female that she had given me milk in the place of a milkshake. Her repsonse : Yes, our ice cream machine was broken so I thought you would enjoy a cup of milk. Yes a $3.00 cup of milk. After hearing her response I spoke with the manager and asked for a refund. It took the manager 25 minutes to determine how to refund my $3.00. Actually asked if I would take a gift card. Being pissed by that time I refused anything less than cash.

It irks me when someone asks for some information (technical or otherwise) on an internet forum and the OP doesn't bother to say "Thanks" to the people who have taken the time to respond. ;?;?;?

Went to the doctors today.
6PM appointment.
Knew I would have to wait.
Dr. typically runs late and I like him and don't want to change again.
Anyway the nurse that is usually there was pregnant when I was there last and she was not there today. Never saw her smile or in a good mood, ever.
The nurse that was there tonight was upbeat, smiled, polite, apologized for the long wait, etc.
When the Dr. was finished and I was leaving, I made a point of telling her how I appreciated her positive up beat attitude and that you rarely see that in today's world.
Her reply was something like, Thanks, there no sense being in a bad mood it helps no one and she was aware I had waited a long time and apologized again.
That's the way it should be. (or something like that)
If we're gonna b!tch about the bad, we should give props for the good.
