I had a friend that was a commercial lobsterman, and h said the lobster move on temperature changes,- he said he was consistent because he dropped his traps at various depths along their "migration"-

Do your traps have a lot of growth on them? If so, bring a stiff brush out with you and scrub them down. You can spray bleach on them or H.P. to keep the crud off them. Also, the lobsters will start fishing by the end of the month. I never put my traps in till the last week of June. Before that just a waste of time and effort. Unless you are looking for crabs. Early season is the best time for crabs. Bait bags are not an issue from what I have seen. P.S. Try a can of cat food in your bait bag punch a few holes in it with a church key or screwdriver. It works. Joe.

Don't through away your bait bags because you used them before..
Bait bags come in different sizes. You might have the wrong size mesh.
What kind do you use?
Where are you putting the pots? Its not to late to catch spring lobsters.

I use D & R bait bags for two seasons now. I love em and there tough as hell. I doubt its the bags, you just might not be dropping where there at. I had the same problem when I started last year.

I would think that any harsh chemicals would serve to drive creatures away not bring them in. the lobsters are attracted to rotten disgusting fish. I would stinky bait bags with fish smell would be a blessing.

I have NEVER cleaned a bait bag. Cleaning agents are only going to keep them away. I have always used the large mesh bags with ties..
I always start my season with my traps running west to east out of GH. I run them over the course of 1 mile and that gives me a good variety of depths. I find out which ones are producing and tighten the group to that area. As the water temps change they'll move in out out from shore. There is no "spot" since they migrate a bit, but you want to look for ledges and hard bottom with rocks.

Can you use bait cages. That's what we use hoop netting for them.. Try using fresh mackerel if you can.
