Can't say that I agree with you. Alive, I think he would still be able to carry out his tactics and strategies albeit from inside a prison cell and in a much diminished capacity, but dead, he's nothing more than a decomposing body and I wouldn't give it back! Hell, throw it in a NY landfill and let the buzzards pick it apart! I hope the troops that got him were atleast able to get a trophy photo much like a trophy buck. Perhaps even a photo of them pissing on the dead body! Sorry but I lost 343 brother firefighters as well as the civilian and military personnel who were victims of this POS. "Now we are going to get attacked hard core.. its bitter sweet I pray that 9/11 does not happen again"
Sounds like from that like you feel we are provoking them by striking back and that perhaps we should have just left him alone.

2 Helicopters of Navy Seals were sent in, killed 2 couriers, Osama, one of Osama's sons and not sure if I heard correctly but also a woman who was acting as a human shield. Looks like we're denying the claims that this was a joint effort with Pakistan.

I understand we all should think this is good... and it is... in some respects. But mostly it is bad.
If he's guilty of what they say he is, and he's dead. It's great.
But keep in mind. of the following. This make Obama stronger, makes them (the alleged enemy) hate us more, and will likely cause an unfounded high-point in our economy which will make the bottom worse.
Sorry for the dose of realty during the jubilation, but somebody has to keep their head on straight.

Your mentality is in part what is wrong with the world today, people like you don't want to hold others accountable for their actions.
The US and The Navy Seals held Osama accountable for his actions and he paid the ultimate price. It's a great day to be an AMERICAN.

I hope he had the time to let the realization hit him that the USA had paid a house call.

This is a great time for America. I am particularly proud of our young people who turned out all over America to show their support. Singing The Star Stangled Banner at Penn State, saying the pledge of Alligence in NYC (and including "under God"), mixed ages and races embracing, including what might have been some Muslims.

I am very sorry for your loss. I think I know the mixed emotions you are feeling. We lost my stepson in Iraq and he would not have been there in the first place if not for Bin Laden. I could not be happier that the son of a bitch is dead, but it certainly makes me reflect on the death and pain he has been responsible for.
It must be especially hard for you as your wife was an innocent in all of this and a victim of the attack that set everything in motion that has happened in the last 10 years. Both of you will be in my prayers.
Great news. My thanks and prayers go out to those who serve.

Pete, in reflection, I had many pro and con thoughts last night. In the end, my God is vengeful and I'm willing to live with the consequences. Strategically, eliminating Bin Laden may or may not make a difference, it's simply something that needed to be done.
Yes, Obama will take credit for this, his personal gain will be short lived. More importantly, the world knows no matter who is President, we will not stop, we will be dissuaded.

Interesting news. Of course his brother Obama will take credit. An outstanding job performed by the best of the best. (I hope the news accounts are true). Shows what can be done by a group of highly trained professionals somewhat unfettered by our "commander in chief".
Me, I'm staying away from airplanes and densely populated sewers like New York for the next few years. The repercussions will also increase the activities of the cretins at TSA, so good luck flying. This is a great opportunity for the present administration to clamp down on our freedoms in the name of security.

I was surprised by the amount of emotions I had after hearing about the raid and getting the asshole. Finally. A small justice for the thousands killed on 9/11 and the resulting wars.
I have an engineer who works for me that came from Pakistan as a teenager. His family left for a better life (farther was a physician). Nice guy and a Muslum. He talks about how the masses in that country have very little or no education. They live it tribes/villages and without many other options become brainwashed on the radical teachings. Heck, if I was told since I was a kid that I would get 100 virgins for doing something stupid I might end up believing it. We will always be fighting people that hate us for what we have and who we are. There won't be a way to negotiate peace...

Clearly I'm out numbered. LOL. Carry on. LOL. But know this, if you think we've won a single thing as a result of this, you're dreaming. We haven't won anything... nor will we.
Who's economy is in the tank as a result of the trillions spent on this wannabe war?
Who's nation is having their rights taken away one at a time because of this?
Who's children are going to have to pay for this?
But yeah. We're winning. You keep telling yourselves that. Just like I'm certain you think we won WW2, Vietnam, Korea, and every other "war" we've been in.
Go get in your Honda or Toyota, and keep typing on your communist built computers. LOL.
But yeah, we won. We got "him". We should put him next to Saddam... another one we "got"... how did that do for us? Are we out of the there yet? Heck, are we out of Korea yet!??! LOL.
Wow, I understand the need for unity and the need to parade in the street that we "got him" -- but in reality, we didn't get anyone or anything. We're exactly where we were before, and this isn't going to change a thing.
Wake up before what little we have left of this awesome country goes bye-bye too.

Question -
Not trying to start anything - just curious if you have experianced living outside of the country...

Pete,
I understand where you're coming from, BUT.....
Before WW2 we were an isolationist country. In your opinion, how far should we have allowed Japan and Germany get before we got involved? Wasn't Pearl Harbor enough or should we have waited till they got on American soil.
Is the war on terrorism good for our economy? Maybe, considering the possibility of a nuke in NYC. Do most people want to be putting our resources and our young men and women in harms way to police the world? I don't think so. Is everything we are do right and correct? no, I don't think so.
And that's if you really believe they got "him" and if you believe it was "him" who was behind it all. But that's another story.
So what should we have done? It is so easy to see the downside of everything.

Pete - your points are debatable. The war/terrorism excuse is only convenient. If it wasn't used something else would have been resulting in the same outcome. Our liberties are being systematically taken away by design. Our gov't is making it so that as many people are dependent on it as possible. When every economist in the world knows the answers to our problems yet nothing is done, it is most certainly the planned outcome.

I am asking about a very specific event here. I would never argue that everything is hunky dory, but how can you talk about the downside of taking out this murderer? Truth be told, I probably agree with a ton of what you think (saddam WMD was a clear lie from the start), but you cannot argue that we needed to eliminate Bin Laden when we got our window.

So how do you go about destroying the economy of a terrorist organization? We have done all possible in terms of cash flow control on this front. It has minimal effect.
How do you destroy the economy of Afghanistan? Turn it into a dirt poor country? Wait, it's already there.
I agree that conventional warfare has very limited effect; however, your thesis that economic warfare is the new frontier doesn't have any teeth in terms of effective implementation. It sounds good from the lecturn, but it can't be put into any cogent, effective practice. The Chinese aren't kicking our ass by design, we're handing it to them. Any organization is harbored somewhere. A "somewhere" is usually located in a country. A country (as "dirt poor" as you may think it is) has an economy that is important to the residents of the country. You gain control of whatever variables control that economy. It doesn't matter if the country trades in rabbits or gold bars. You can destabilize it. Either with little condoms for rabbits, or the way it's been done to us. ;)

And if we turn off the TV people might just look around and realize they're getting the shaft.

Pete,
You are a great guy, and gave me some great boating advice, but I can't agree with you here.
My whole family, especially my grandparents have been in the military. My mom and dad are the only two that haven't. While I may agree that war and killing isn't always the solution, our persistence in this caused us to kill the biggest image of terrorism in the world. I am currently in the NAVY reserve and in 3 years after I am done sailing I am going to go active duty coast guard for search and rescue and drug interdiction. As you can tell, I prefer search and save over search and destroy, but you NEED to be supportive of our troops. We lost quite a few friends in 9/11 (I live in NY) and some of our friends have lost immediate family members. You have to see that we are not wasting our time with this battle. I fully understand where you are coming from, but please don't make it seem like were wasting our time here.

You didn't answer the main question. Good job at taking an example out of context. How bout the possibility of flying commercial jet airliners into two of the largest buildings in the world and completely destroying them while killing almost 3000 occupants? Is that also a far fetched scenario?
Nuke in NYC, if you don't think it's possible, then you're the one with his "head in sand".
WMD, sure he had them. Of course it depends on your definition of WMD. Did he have what the CIA (or whoever) say he had? I don't think so. I also don't think it matters, but that's another discussion.

I like to think that Obama has actually adopted water-boarding seeing as he has adopted government sanctioned hits (which I thought our Congress outlawed).
Perhaps, Osama is going to die from a gunshot to his left eye after the water-boarding and keel hauling is finished on the USS Carl Vinson.

I like to think that Obama has actually adopted water-boarding seeing as he has adopted government sanctioned hits (which I thought our Congress outlawed). .
Actually this was the Joe Biden approach that supposedly Obama rejected. JB said forget about boots on the ground and unwinable attrition war in Asia (as have many many Generals over the years) and stop the unwinable wars on ideas and concepts (terrorism, dictator, religions Autocrats and the non Democratic stuff) end overt regime changes, nation building and get serious about tracking down and killing terrorists with the CIA and Special Ops. This is where we seem to be heading with Patreaus going to the CIA. Good for Biden and Obama and good for us.
I assume the following pertains to our new terrorist response policy and not our desire to remake the world in our own image:
"Several Special Ops sources say that President Obama has taken concrete steps to once again integrate JSOC more fully into the broader US military strategy globally. The bin Laden operation, which was done in concert with the CIA, seems to be evidence of that. The primacy of JSOC within the Obama administration's foreign policy--from Yemen and Somalia to Afghanistan and Pakistan--indicates that he has doubled down on the Bush-era policy of targeted assassination as a staple of US foreign policy."
All I am thinking after watching this is DAMN, Iraq was a costly time delaying diversion. And - all 19 911 Hijackers were from Saudi Arabia and one from UAR and we spent all this time in a War against Afghans and Iraqis - what a freegin waste of lives and money and never once even thought about actions against Saudi Arabia - Bush or Obama.

For my liberal friends- one of the details coming out is how we got the intel to whack Osama. One of the clowns that George Bush waterboarded gave us the name of a trusted Osama courier. Guess what, we recently found the courier
Thanks Mr. Bush
No really... you believe this stuff?
You quite often draw some amazing conclusions; bless your heart.

God Bless you too. LOL. That's the best you could do. Doesn't surprise me. You often say little.
Ya gotta be kiddin......................this is nothing more than a political move. Oh yea in keeping with Islamic procedure, they buried his body at sea......I can't stop laughing at how gullible people are.
And if this gets me banned, so be it.
I don't think it should get you banned in the least. People in this great country are VERY gullible. They believed that GW was going to "fight the wer on terrer" and even believed that we "Mission Accomplished" and all the other crap. Heck, there are still people (as shown in this thread) that think Saddam had WMDs. Saddam was lucky if he had a blender. LOL. I'm waiting for the "We got Him" magnets made in China to come out.

Current and former U.S. officials say that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/politics/khalid-shaikh-mohammed.htm#r_src=ramp), the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, provided the nom de guerre of one of bin Laden's most trusted aides. The CIA got similar information from Mohammed's successor, Abu Faraj al-Libi. Both were subjected to harsh interrogation tactics inside CIA prisons in Poland and Romania.

The possibility of a nuke in NYC. Really now? Did you believe Saddam had WMDs too?
Pete, not trying to start a debate here,,, BUT it would be naive of you or any other American to think this is not a possibility in NYC or any other major metropolitan city.
Have you ever heard of a "suitcase nuke?" According to the former Russia National Security Advisor Russia developed such weapons and some of their sutecase or backpack nuke inventory cannot be accounted for.
Unfortunately, there are a significant number of people/groups in this world that would like nothing more than to kill as many Americans as possible. Of that number, there is a minority percentage that not only have the will, but they have the rescources to pose a very serious threat. I am of the belief that there is a strong possibility that hypothetical senario of a nuclear weapon being detonated inside this country will occur within our lifetime.

It's been fun, I've got to go back to moving furniture for my ex.

Ok. Let's say you're right. And let's say it could happen. And who knows, maybe it could. Let's ask ourselves a very simple question.
Why now? Why, until now, has our Nation not been under this kind of "threat". What has changed? We're still The USA, we're still 50 states, we haven't gone and tried to overtake Mexico or anything. So what has changed?
Do you *think* that maybe, just maybe there may be policies in place, in recent history, that have made it more salient for these things to occur? If so, what happened? What can we do?
Nahhhhhh... Let's just keep talking about how "we got him" -- LOL. Yeah, you got "him". LOL. Geesh.
It doesn't scare the crap out of you that it took almost a decade to "get him" and that we still don't have anything where the WTC once stood? Really? We should have WTCII built twice as tall (not literally) and started formulating a plan to destroy the enemy the same way our enemies are destroying us.

Its not temporary moral boost for those that lost someone in 911 or the thousands that have been mamed or killed in the years since 911 fighting to keep terrorist from doing it again. Its not a temporary moral boost for the thousands of service men and women that are putting there lives on the line everyday to protect your freedoms. My point was that someone on this thread claims our "recent" policies had something to do with this aggression against our country - I was trying to show that this is nothing new... Hell, the Arabs have been blowing up British assets 100's of years ago - its what they do...
I am elated that we popped OBL,,, and I am ALL for going after anyone that targets US Citizens at home or abroad.... No living in fear here
Why are there not more attacks against Israel - Cause they know the response will be massive.... Thats how u treat them....

I am not sure what that tirade was all about... :roll My point was simple, if you live life in denial, life just might unexpectedly bite you in the ass. The devil has many faces and there have been devils throughout history, not just recent history. Killing Osama was GREAT sure, but it was nothing but a symbolic killing,,, chopping off one head of a monster that has many.
There are a few things in this world that scare me, one is the thought of losing my wife, child, brother, sister, or friend due to the actions of one of these religious whacko's. I only hope to god that if the "bomb" goes off in DC, that I called in sick to work that day to go fishing. :)

To those that would say we should pull back and defend our shores, I ask this. Where is the list of demands? There isn't one. The list is sociopathic, corrupt, religious zealots want to be free to pillage the land (oil) and force others to live by their rules. All in the name of religion. Allowing this "organization" to grow and evolve unrestrained is a recipe for future disaster. While he is one man, he is their leader. He is also likely the smartest of the bunch (note he was with the ladies in Pakistan while the boys were sweating it out in a nasty cave with marine snipers on their ass). When you take him out, the organization becomes more emotional and less intelligent. They will make more mistakes - it's definitional. Unlike most organizations, let's face it, the bench is not very deep here when it comes to brains. My last observation is that I am sick of hearing about the notion that we just piss off the snake whenever we exact revenge and that these guys are "crazy". I think of a time not so long ago when a "crazy" enemy used to fly planes into our ships when they ran out of ammo. We burned their shadows into the sides of buildings and now it's a nice place to visit.
When Islamic terrorists give us a list of demands that says - "we will stop trying to knock down 300+ floors of buildings in downtown manhattan when ....", I would consider it. Until then, I would rather have them sweat it out at the business end of our boys weapon of choice. The reality is that the real policy decision is too tough. The fact that Pakistan , SA and others quietly support the fundamentalist cause is our real problem.
Sorry for the dislocated rant.

The one demand we hear all the time is remove the infidels troops from Muslim countries... and I am all over that. We should go back to bombings and surgical raids on terrorists. Oh and we should stop all this aid as well, I just read this from a Pakistani journalist:
"Pakistanis want to be free of the chokehold of western aid"
I say let's go ahead and free them from that awful chokehold of aid as well.

There's an older gent who lives near me that has a son about as high up as you can go in the black ops department. Not the business end but rather the thinking and electronics end.
We were having breakfast this morning at the local greasy spoon and he was relating how he called his son and asked how come we took so long to smoke Bin Laden if we knew he was there. His son told him that we knew where he was far before last August but that we didn't pop him because he had "value". In other words thing were being learned by just watching him.
Obviously, that value has run out......

Well if that is true--we are being fed a pack of lies. The value ran out because Trump needed trumping? I don't like being lied to. I'd rather have silence. There is inherent value in every soldier that died in those 2 years.

The truth is that announcing the "treasure trove" we captured has caused all the squirrels to go to ground.
The intel will have little value for future kills (unless this op happened earlier--which I doubt.) Silence sometimes works both ways.
A military op in Pakistan: so some people heard helicopters and gunfire? No news there. OBL's network probably did not know where he was. A few weeks of silence could have reaped tremendous benefit. Just sayin'

Don't you think that maybe in the year or so that we have been following that courier around the Middle East, he might have led us some other places? Remember that we followed him to Bin Laden's house as early as August of 2010. Wonder where that trip started and what other stops he might have made?;) We only announced Bin laden's demise because he is one of the handful of top Al Qaeda guys who we HAVE to announce as being dead. The tricky one will be Al- Zawahiri because he is apparently still more involved in the operational side than Bin Laden was so he moves around a lot.

I hope so. But, I fear that only time forced our Pres to finally pull the trigger. It was probably about to be exposed. Too many people knew. Look at the huge number of gov't personnel already described as being involved since August.
Incidentaly: some of the choppers used are only being operated by the 160th SOAR (army). What is up with that? This info was released on day one. Plenty more involved than what has been reported. Like I said: no one would have noticed if the op was carried out and not announced (things going KaBoom in the night are common there). Especially Al Querra--they were not on OBL's need to know list. Would not this approach bring a greater chance at capping Al-Zawaheebegeebee? After all, they all are on the move now. Whereas, if carried out in silence--they would not know what was comming.
Missed opportunity for a photo op.

Kudos need to be given to the 160th Task Force (Night Stalkers). They are the ones who flew the Seals in. Finally, the Pentagon is acknowledging the Army's involvement. As I said above--too many agencies involved--it forced the pres' hand. It was bound to become public.
Kudos for the 160th! Hoaah!

I have no doubt OBL is dead. When I referred to forcing the prez hand. I was referring to getting the courage to make the call. It took forever. It was imminent that it was going to be leaked--a proliferation of government types of all ilk have been involved since Sept. Many since Jan. 2010.
