I will be heading there the first week in October. I have been browsing many post and it seems that the majority of people have had a bad experience. If the fishing is great, then obviously I want to give it a shot but don't feel like wasting $1000 to go for a boat ride. Anyway have some recommendations on whether to go or just enjoy the beach. Also, if anyone knows some good guides. Thanks for any help.

I live fairly close to the DR and Puerta Plata is ony about 80 miles from Grand Turk. I have been there many times, but never fished there. We got continually hassled with street vendors and wannabe guides. I have also heard many horror stories from Dominican nationals who now live here in the TCI. Apparently, It is virtually impossible to find a billfish charter that practises catch and release. Most of them sink in the gaff because they claim they need the "meat" to feed their families. On the plus side it is a beautiful country (once you get out of the city) and it is a very cheap place to stay, with all inclusive resorts from $50 a night for all you ccan eat/drink/lodging... Good luck..

That is what I have been hearing. I would love to fish for bill fish but don't want to kill them. I also can go for a boat ride when ever I want and want to fish. Looks like it might not be the best place to fish. Hopefully, someone will know a guide that they can stand behind.
