I will spend a week in Big Pine Key between May 7 and 13th and would appreciate some advice on good places to fish. I will have a 25 foot center console boat. I'm not that familiar with the fishing in this area and would appreciate some advice on techniques, species of fish to seak and places to fish. Thank you

I live about 10 away in Cudjoe Key. What type of fishing are you doing? The patch reefs in shallow water are great for yellowtail and small bottom fish. Hit the reef line for some bigger bottom fish. Just beyond or right up on (depending on what the weather is doing) start trolling. The dolphin should start coming in pretty good then. The reef is only a 10 min ride, and to get out to 250 ft is only 13-15 min. Look for birds, debris, yada yada, I m sure you had heard this. Also depending on the wind, and when the gulf stream gets close, look for rips and color changes they have been real productive for me when there are not many birds flying around. I am not much of a run and gun type, just cant afford the gas.

Hope that helps, and welcome to THT.

Go over to the Big Pine Fishing Lodge and find out what time they are going to dump the fish carcass from the cleaning stations. Usually they do it on the east side of the bridge there and the big tarpon are all over the area!!!!
