Does anybody troll with Avet MXlL or JX reels with 20lb mono. It seems all I hear of is people using LX's.

I don't and don't know anyone who does, but I use them for Striped Bass and Bluefish bait fishing all the time. I also don't know anyone who trolls with 20 lb test, 30 is about as light as anyone I know goes, and for Bass & Blues we use 40 lb, which is a problem for the MXL's on 2 counts - they wouldn't hold enough mono and with only 9 lbs of max strike drag, the drag is a little light for us.

I've trolled the lx's for skippys fat alberts and bonito. The smaller reels would do the same I just don't own any. It's a lever drag. They were designed way back when for trolling. Using them for drowing bait isn't a good idea as everytime freespool you are opening the reel up for water intrusion. It doesn't matter what brand of lever drag you use in that application that is a feature that all of them share.
One of the reasons Alantani sees so many of the little avets with corrosion issues I would bet money they are used for bait fishing instead of trolling. You never see any of the trolling sizes all gunked up just the little ones. That's not to say using a 30 or 50 bait fishing would be trouble free as the same freespool/open to water intrusion issues would again be present.

We've got about 20 of the JX models two speed 6.0 with 20 on them - they work fine. Also using the EX and HX reels too. Have them on four boats.

Trolled for the first ime last season with my MXL'S and JX'S for bluefish, we had a blast with them. We have 50lb spectra on them.

I troll what I call "dink baits" on an MXL with 40# and a rod that is probably way too light but it works very well. I can easily change it out for bait fishing as well. It is great for "run-and-gun" on mahi and blackfins. Hoping to pick up a cobia this weekend.

;?

On the left coast, where we fish bait the vast majority of the time, this isn't an issue.

Any reel will have corrosion issues that isn't properly maintained, regardless of how you fish it and regardless of how much you paid for it. We play in a vat of acid that will eat ANYTHING metal.
