My boys picked up a penn 16VSX for me for Xmas this year, my question is what size line to use.
I fish offshore for tuna 4 maybe 5 times a year in the Jersey Canyons and also shark fish.
Was thinking 500 yds 80lb JB solid with a bimini twist for loop to loop or go with 130 Jb Hollow and splice top shots on.
From what I've read both are 100% connections.
Opinions are appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

I run 65# JB Hollow with a 100lb Quattro Topshot for anything from groundfishing up to Tuna Jigging. Connection made with a loop to loop.
Sounds like you are on the right track.

those penn vsx's are nice.i think they make a vsx 12 now.heavy but well built.
We rig ours for trolling and chunking. They have 80 lbs PowerPro solid core bimini to an albright to 50 lb mono topshot.

Thanks for the replys, was thinking solid might be better for me, looks alot easier to change out topshot if fish are leader shy, that is while chunking.

JB 60 breaks at 92#. You could put alittle more line on and have the advantage of hollow core for spliced end loops.

50lb Jerry Brown braid on mine with no topshot. Want NO stretch for hooking wahoo at 7 knots. Great little reels.

80 Jb hollow core and a 50 yard topshot of 80 mono. troll, chunk, jig. You can do it all with this setup spooled in this fashion.

Thanks for all the help, went with the 80 lb. JB solid.
Since i don't have the splicing and rev. latch needles, i went solid.
Picked up 600 yds. ea. of 80-65-50 from from a site sponsor.
Great price.
Thanks again for the help.

Since you're in NJ, I'd contact Basil at his shop in Harrington Park, NJ. There's probably no one on the east coast who could give you better advice -- and do the rigging as well
