Another tow vehicle question. I'm all over the place. Chevy Tahoe w/ 5.3 liter XFE engine. Anybody towing with this truck? It's GM's try to get better gas mileage. The XFE stands for extended fuel economy. Basically they made somethings lighter and put 3.01 gears in the rearend. I don't care about the mileage thing I just saw one for a good price. Will the higher gears tow my 2350 Bluewater mostly 15 minutes to the boat ramp but also a 300 mile round trip 2 or 3 times a year without blowing up someday? I'm thinking no but maybe somebody has one and has some goods things to say about it. According to Chevy the towing capacity is the same for the XFE and the regular 5.3.
Thanks, Chris.

It would probably do it but thats a mighty low gear ratio. If its a 4 speed transmission, I believe you'd be putting a strain on the engine and perhaps the transmission. I have the 5.3 with a 3.73 rear end and it tows fine. I didn't even know that they had produced any with a 3.01 ratio.

Yeah, they only did it in 09 and 2010. It gets about 1 MPG better than the normal set up. I don't care about the 1 MPG It's just that I can get a good deal on one. I believe it is a new 6 speed transmission also, which they claim helps out in the towing. Anybody got one?

There's a reason the price is so attractive and it's the 3.01 (actually, probably a 3.08:1) axle. Have you driven it yet?

I once had a 5.0L in a full-size Chevy van with 3.08 axle and 4-speed overdrive. Most gutless wonder, towing or not, I've ever driven. It could barely tow a 3500 lb boat in 3rd gear. People who got the 3.42 or 3.73 were happier with their vehicles. The Tahoe has an effective axle ratio even lower by comparison, due the larger diameter tires than my Chevy van. I'd be suspicious you'd wind up towing that 23' boat in 3rd or 4th gear with a 6-speed transmission.

The XFE engine also has "active fuel management". That engine in 2007 models has developed a reputation as an oil-burner after 3-4 years- go check the forums.

Buy it if you want, but I swore off mis-geared vehicles with problematic engines.

Thanks Yarcraft, You're right it is 3.08. I think I'm gonna keep looking for a regular Tahoe or Yukon without the XFE.

I think it got the harder tires and aero package from the hybrid versions. Maybe some lighter parts (aluminum) here and there...

I have heard oil burn problems too. I would keep looking inless the vehicle is like half price.
