Doing my research on the HDS 8 & 10 models and they are identical in features except for the screen size. What I can't find is the difference between the Base US vs Insight US models except for price. Been all over Lowrance's website, as well as BOE's and I can't find it in writing anywhere. Anyone know what the difference between the two are and why the Insight is a couple hundred $$ more?

The insight has detailed depth contours and shading, better nav aids, the base maps are just basic outlines.

That's handy, but now I'm even more confused. "The Enhanced
U.S. Base-map offers the same geographic coverage area as the Insight mapping" - does that mean it includes Insight mapping? Or that they just cover the same area? I thought ALL HDS models had the "enhanced base-map" - is that wrong?

All that means is that all the lakes that are included with the Insight mapping will be included with the Enhanced Base Map as well as many more lakes and river systems.

All HDS units include the Basemap built into them. The insight models include some more detailed mapping on top of the basemap.

Really, I'm not trying to be difficult, but I believe you are saying that they all have the Enhanced Basemap, and that Insight adds detailed mapping, and there isn't yet another (even better) mapping option.

Is that right?

Navionics makes a chip for the unit that's better than the Insight IMO. I bought the Insight but I wish I went with the Navionics instead.

If you haven't purchased yet, get the base unit and then buy the navionics chips to go with it. If you fish structure get the navionics fish n chip as well.

I'm not a fisherman, but I am interested in trying it eventually. But looking at the Navionics chips, I'd need one for the US and one for Canada because we boat in both places (we have a cabin in the San Juans about 10 miles from the demarcation line). And if I want to display a chart on two units (I prefer to have one zoomed out for context, and one zoomed in) that's...$800 in chips. I don't need the absolute best charts, but at those prices I'm going to look somewhere else...maybe a couple of iPads (I'm happy enough with the Navionics charts on my iPhone, but they are more like $10 each).

Or I could use a couple of tablets running Coastal Explorer. And I already have Garmin's BlueCharts for a handheld.

Hell, maybe I'll just get a couple of R80s on EBay - I already have a bunch of CMAP NT+ cartridges as well.

Yes. All the units have the Basemap built into them. The models with the Insight mapping have more detailed mapping on many lakes, but also have the basemap data.

This is the option i'd go with. You can also look into the Insight HD cards. Lowrance now sells the insight mapping on cards which include more detail than the mapping that is built into the units.

I think I'm going to start out with an HDS-5M Nautic Insight - they're under $500 and there's currently a $50 rebate from Lowrance. The Navionics 2XG covers both BC and my Washington state waters, so I'll probably get that as well.

Thanks for you help.

So is there a difference in the Insight USA and an Insight HD card? If so, I'd like to see some screenshots.

It is the same data, however the Insight HD cards allow you to zoom in an additional 5-6 levels.
