I would like to buy a PDA or GPS and be able to read charts, determine wind speed and boat speed. I read in an old article someone had a Compaq IPAC PDA and it was gps compatible. Can anyone tell me what they are using for a handheld version?

A HH GPS would provide chart and SOG
A unit that had a NMEA 0183 port could be connected to a wind speed sensor
Here are the Garmin units

There are iPhone apps that provide that data. The Navionics chart app utilizes the iPhone's GPS and covers just about everything you might want from a handheld GPS device. The iPhone's "Wind Meter" app provides wind velocity by listening to the sound of the air movement over the iPhone's microphone. How accurate that is, I can't say, but it's an ingenious way to get the data without an external sensor. I love mine.
