I ordered a water pump, kit, thermostats, and pressure control valve from SIM. Had a Yamaha Tech. put the water pump in.

Issue I was having was an alarm going off, after removing the thermostat's the engine only ran 1200 rpm's. I chased all kinds of trails thinking it was a safe mode issue. Turns out after noticing the throttle roller not advancing on the throttle cam and finding a crack in the throttle cable behind the motor, it was the throttle cable. I took the boat to Yamaha again and had new throttle cable and shift cable installed.

Went out with the Tech and at 5500 Rpm's the alarm goes off. Tech opens up the cowling and checks the temp with a infrared therm and sees 141 temp at the base of the engine.
By the thermostats had about 120 degrees. Tech says this looks like corrosion of salt in the water passage's, sugguest removing cyl heads and water jacket cover and cleaning out.

About $650 job. The engine is a 200 HP 1993 TXRR,

I've thought about seeing if I could take off the cyl heads myself and clean around the passage's, and order the gaskets and if I get in trouble then take it to Yamaha.

Question is before I try to see if the bolts will come off easy, ( I sprayed PB Blaster on all bolts last night and just tried #15 and it moved pretty easy, of course that's only one:) )

But before all of that somewhere on this forum I read always check the obvious. After looking at the pics did I put the pressure control valve in correctly?

spring first then plastic valve up aginst rubber o ring and tighten bolts after pushing in the spring.

Also, any tips on taking out the cyl head bolts? Thought about using a heat gun around the bolt while trying to lossen the bolt with a steady pressure on the 6 point socket.

Thanks

You have the poppet valve installed correctly. The round head goes in towards the grommet.

As far as removing the bolts on the heads, we are in freshwater here and everything normally comes off easily. But in saltwater, you might run into some problems. Maybe not with the larger diameter bolts, but the smaller ones. Some of those you can turn and snap easily and not even realize it until its to late.

Thanks for the reply Andy, I've just loosened all the small bolts 10mm on both heads, unscrewed them out slightly and applied more PB Blaster to the threads after pulling back the washer from the cyl head, ( no craked bolts :grin:) I'm about to try the larger bolts, taking lots of pictures of this whole process. I'll try and put them in photobucket or here, hate to take up a lot of space,

Can't find too many web pictures of cleaning out water jackets around the heads.

Any advice is welcomed from anyone, for those who have thought about doing this I'll keep up the post, here in Florida, well Salt, and more Salt.

Thanks,

Wow, talking about holding your breath, Well the cover is off, for those who have done this before, How bad is this?

I loosen some of the 12mm bolts holding the cyl cover on. They are very tight but have grease on them from before? ( bought boat used, been out in the Ocean twice;?)

Should I take the whole cover off before trying to clean the heads and what does the cylinder head look like after the cover is off? Hard to tell from diagrams>

I'll let everyone know:rofl:

I'm using a 3/8 inch socket wrench, craftmans, using the small 10mm 6 point socket. This last bolt just on't move. I could use a 1/4 wrench for more leverage but I don't want to break it now.

I sprayed more PB Blaster and will let it sit overnight.

Any tips from anyone?

Use heat with a heat gun, ( have one) around the bolt and try to loosen at the same time perhaps.

Thanks
some progress, still new, (unchartered waters), at this

Just thinking about the left side makes you nervous. First last night, sprayed PB Blaster, This afternoon after talking with the other boaters at work, I hammered or tapped lightly on top of the bolt making sure I didn't miss.

Sprayed CRC 656 on bolt and then on the third try, using the 3/8 inch Craftsman wrench, 10mm 6 side 12mm socket I heard the bolt snap free. I rocked it back tight after the second try and pulled up with the socket squarely on the bolt and it came free.

Now, I have the Selco manual and it says not to pry at the gasket but use the tabs to release the head.

From the pictures can somebody tell me how to lift off the cover?

I think I use a small pry bar at the top of the head as in the picture, not sure though.

Thanks to everyone for there help.
