Does anyone know if I can replace just the plastic retaining piece on an OMC shift cable? It's the black plastic piece that inserts in the retaining clip.
Mine broke in half while doing some work on the shifter. I would hate to have to run a whole new cable.
Any one I've ever seen screws off. If we're talking about the same things...

No, on the other end that attaches to the shifter. It goes in the retainer clip on the shift handle.

Did you ever find a solution other than replacing the entire cable?

That is probably going to be the result - but pulling a new one is usually not hard at all - 2 guys and a little dish soap and it 10 mins

Don't know if omc is the sam as my merc cables(teleflex) but when mine broke i went to a marine salvage guy in my area and purchased an old shifter with cables. The ends did screw off and did fit my cable. cost me $35.00 and 15 minutes to adjust. that was 6 years ago.

IF you do remember to leave a pull string

Actually, i fixed it with 2 stainless steel clamps. I clamped on on each side of the retaining piece and it held just fine.
