Hey all,

I've recently purchased a Crestliner boat mainly for fishing so I will be using an electric trolling motor with a Deep Cycle battery.

Now, the engine on the boat is a Outboard 2004 Suzuki DF140 4 stroke and it's charging the crank battery but not the Trolling battery.

I was thinking of simply adding a battery isolator to charge both batteries but I'm unsure if this is a suported way of operating. Is it too much to ask from this engine?

If it is the way to go, do any of you have suggestion on which isolator to purchase and maybe a wiring diagram.

If it is not the proper way of doing I'm totally opened to other suggestions...

Thanks,

PS: Should the radio be mounted on the trolling battery?
PS2: Sorry if my writting is bad, english is not my primary language.

Hi you can charge both batteries from that model motor you need to change out the fuse on the motor to allow this to happen check your owners manual or contact your suzi dealer

I also have a 140 and am set up the way you propose. Buy and connect a combiner to connect your starting battery to your trolling battery. Many including myself use the combiner from yandina.com with excellent results. It works really well. The alternator on that engine puts out 40 amps so there is plenty of power. Also, with a combiner you can save money on an onboard battery charger by going with a single stage charger and charge both batteries. I installed a Minnkota 10 amp charger wired to the trolling battery.

The DF150 has a dual battery charging system, check with your dealer or Suzuki to see if the DF140 has that option.

Of course you can always use an intelligent charging relay. A battery isolator drops the charge voltage .6 volats unless the engine has the ability to move the charging sense wire to the load side of the isolator.

A battery *Combiner* would be better than the old style battery isolator for the reason that jfwireless mentioned. Yandina, Blue Seas Systems and others offer them. The Suzuki 140 does not have 2 charge outputs.

Thanks alot for the replies guys!

So I will order:
http://yandina.com/c100InfoR3.htm

Seems pretty easy to install, it's pretty much setting the batteries in parallel but having the Combiner in between the positives...right?

And once the combiner is installed I can still use an onboard charger to charge the trolling battery?...this is exactly the setup I'm looking for...

This is great!

Yes, the install is very easy. I'm sure the Yandina unit will come with very detailed installation instructions. With the combiner installed, you will usually be able to charge both batteries at the same time. even though you're only connected to one - the combiner will combine them once the voltage is high enough.
