I am looking to put together a wire line outfit (heavy duty). Probably will go with a Penn 9/0 115. My question is about the spool. With wire, will I need a brass or aluminum spool, or does it even matter. What is the difference? I'm even up for suggestions about the set up.

You want chrome over brass. Anodized aluminum will corrode much faster with the wire touching the spool. I assume being in Florida you are looking to go deep for swordfish, if this is the case I cannot offer what size reel you want. We typically use wire for trolling striper's here in NJ, 4/0 is the most common size. I'm sure others will chime in more familiar with your area.

dis-simmilar metals will eat into the spool. if you take extra special care you can limit the damage but never stop it. for this reason many anglers are switching over to braided lines but there is just something about that wire.

Why not stainless steel?

I use alum spool Shimano Charter Specials with wire line and ZERO corrosion. All you do is keep the reels clean by scrubbing them down at the dock. 3 years so far an no issues at all. I was waiting for it, but it never happened.

I use Penn Senators for monel wire. There is corrosion on the spool but it is cosmetic. The bushings on my last Senator wore out long before the spool. Current reels are four years old and have had heavy use. Occasionally I spray the line and spool with WD 40, mostly to preserve the line. No point in using an expensive reel for wire line use.

Some of the older Penn Senators had Bronze Spools. Used them for years and still do. I lean toward Monel wire . It costs more but is easy on the hands and spools-Stuart
