When you guys are learning to tie new knots (like the Australian plait), do you use yarn, rope or something thinker than mono until you get the hang of it?

When you guys are learning to tie new knots (like the Australian plait), do you use yarn, rope or something thinker than mono until you get the hang of it?
I can only get the braid @ 80 lb test. It doesnt work too well at 50 lb.
The first few braids have to be super tight for that knot to work.
