I was wondering if the new DSC VHF will work with chartplotters using NMEA0183?

Answer is yes according to the research that I did, however I am still a bit unclear on how to connect my garmin 2010c, the book is vague and I have not found any concrete answers. I am not in too much of a rush since it will also require me to run a new wire down through my bimini top. One of my catalogs, has a DSC handheld on sale, so I may just grab that for the time being. I am interested in following this thread to see what type of answers you get.

The answer is Yes it will work. All you need to do is identfy one transmit TX wire from your GPS and it hooks to the + wire feed to the radio for the GPS input for the DSC. The ground wire of the radio DSC goes to the ground or shielded wire on the radio for the NEMA0183 on my Lowrance I am using a Blue TX transmit wire and the shielded ground to the wires on my VHF radio. Hope this helps

Note there should be at least two TX transmit and two RX or recieve wires from the NEMA0183 from your GPS and they will be labeled in your GPS book wiriing diagram.

That means when you get a DSC call from your friend's MMSI his position will show up on your GPS? That's excellent. You'll know exactly where he is when he calls in a hookup (and vice versa).

Plus should you ever send out a distress call it will report your position.

Exactly. We are set up that way with a few boats here in the outer banks. We just plug in Our Buddies MMSI numbers and when someone asks us for a position request we can send it by a response feature on the radio. I have it hooked up to my Simrad and Garmin 545. A box with the position shows up on the simrad and a flag at their location shows up on the Garmin.Your radio must be DSC capable to do this. I have a ICOM 602....Stealthy!!

I don't think my el cheapo Cobra radio has that capability. That sounds really cool. :)

DSC is becoming standard on even entry level radios now.....
