From what I have read about Atlantic bft it is heavily over fished and nearing extinction. Why is this good news?

CITES is not the answer to the admited Tuna stock decline and rebuild process. The way CITES works is only the countries that agree to the CITES listing are held to it. Any country that chooses to take exception to the listing are free to do so. Enforcement of existing quotas and regulations that are in place is the way to protect the biomass. Another half ass so called law that would go widely ignored is not going to help anything, in fact it would make things worse in certian parts of the world.

That is the problem, alot of people do not understand How the CITES listing works, what it really means and does, and what it actualy will acomplish.

Also FWIW NOTHING that has ever been listed on CITES apendix 1 has ever come off the listing. EVER

Whats wrong with a trade ban??? Each country catches and eats its own Bluefin. Pretty simple.

Its clear that further inaction will extint the BFT. Yellowfin are next.

when is someone going to do something? The fish are gone. Doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

I'm no expert, but this is my understanding.
There are eastern and western Atlantic stocks. The stocks co-mingle during spawning season and some percentage of fish cross over each way. The eastern Atlantic European countries had been severely overfishing on their side like 6-8X their scientific quota. There have been discussions and finally the countries have been lowering their fishing catches. On the other side the western Atlantic countries (especially the US) have been doing a decent job managing their stocks. I don't know about extintion - there were more smaller fish in the 100-300 range on the eastern US states last year than ever. The stock this year is expected to be even larger. There are regs in place for those that harpoon and commercial & recreational fishermen that appear to be working and allowing the stock to rebuild.

We don't need a unilateral law that only those that have been following the scientific guidelines would be penalized for. We need all countries to follow the guidelines and the stock will be fine.

Creating new legislation will not be an effective answer to the problem.

I am hoping this was just some grandstanding by the U.S. and EU showing they are serious about protecting these fish. Message being, stick to quotas set by ICCAT or next time the vote will go the other way. Anyway, I am happy with the result. I am actually shocked a government plan turned out the way I wanted it to.

What’s wrong with a trade ban? Each country catches and eats its own bluefin? Pretty Simple? You can not be serious..
Obviously you have now idea how Cites works. Did you not even read my post? It is in no way that simple, and if you think a CITES Appendix 1 listing is that simple you need to go back and take another look because you are completely missing the boat.

If Cites Appendix 1 (Or a simple trade ban as you like to think of it) for BFT got passed, it is a sure bet that the Enviros would then get BFT listed as an endangered Species. than how many fish do you think anyone would be able to fish for. Also once listed as an endangered species any look alike fish would also be off limits, and fishing in the breeding and feeding habitat of BFT would be off limits as well.

AGAIN !! This is the problem, a lot of people do not understand How the CITES Appendix 1 listing works, what it really means and does, and what it actually will accomplish.

By the way this simple CITES Appendix 1 trade ban as you call it is only a suggestion not a law. Any country that chooses to take exception to it is welcome to do so with out persecution. And The euro countries that have been grossly and consistently exceeding their ICCAT quotas were open about ignoring it, and Japan was also open about ignoring it. So nothing would have changed except a few little countries would not have been tuna fishing.

Kind of like a cop trying to control speeding by asking people to slow down, but if you choose not to its no biggie.
