While driving from rt 95 to head over to Miami beach, passing by the cruise ships, I noticed radar arrays mounted on light poles on the side of the road for a few miles....

What the heck are they doing with those?? Can you view them online?

Do you have a pic of these things. They may be for the airport which is almost inline with MacArthur causeway which is the road you were on when you came across to the beach.

If like NY harbor, they are for commercial boat -ship traffic...all traffic checks in on vfh channel 14 .

No pics, but they just looked like regular old Furuno or Raymarine 4' 10kw arrays, mounted on brackets that stuck out the side, near the top of the light poles. They were about 1/4 mile apart. But the weird thing to me was, the canal they were on only looked about 50 or 100 yards wide or so.

Do they think they need radar to see a 20 story high, 1000' long, 200' wide Cruise ship coming down the 300' wide canal???

Krikeee!!!! :trout:

Ships coming in to a harbor (ny) must call in to vessal traffic ,state name ,size, route ect. ...from that point on they are tracked by radar...just like air traffic controller for aircraft. In NY you will see the open arrays on the west side of the narrows,Red Hook by the Butter Milk channel,on or by the suger plant ( Domino Suger) on the East river just pass the Williamsburg bridge.
