may is good, I'm looking for input from all interested so that we can make it a yearly thing, also it is legal to camp on the south side of CAT island we have spent a number of weekends out there lot's of fun and a quick run to the chandeliers or the deep holes up in the rigoulette's

You'll need to check with the National Park Service about camping on Cat Island. As far as I know it is legal. I don't know if the activity requires a pass or permit of any sort.

Cat is only a short distance from the eastern edge of the LA marsh. Potential hot speck and red action in that area in May. You will need a LA license though.

the smugglers cove area u can camp without a permit but no barn fire's, it's on the SW. side
and your upwind of the trees and marsh, keep's the bigs down.
I will call about permitting tomorrow just to be sure
If your interested put this thread on your notification list and i will check out and post all details

We camp on smugglers quite a bit in may and june. I don't have a cat, but i'll be there anyway. :)
We always start camp fires in that area and have never had a problem. The last time we camped, the bugs were so bad the fire saved our butts.

I will Supply BBQ Fry, and Boil equipment along with a few sacks of crawfish.
I am planning on bringing my portable drive in movie system and we can watch a film on the big screen under the stars.
I'm sure we can get a biggest fish pool together and eat our catch that night
If you are not the camping sort a few casino's have slips and the hard rock is next to the small craft harbor and launch ramps in Biloxi.

We are going to try and make it too!?! I have to see if I can get out of a prior comittment.
I have a Glacier Bay 2670 Isle Runner that I have been wanting to camp on and this sounds like a great way to do that.
I would be launching from Orange Beach AL. Any idea on how far of a run from there?
Would anyone have some coordinates for cat island. Never been there and don't know the wtater over there. Anything to look out for? Bars, flats, sunken Katrina riprap? Can you make an approach from the gulf side being deeper?
Thanks for putting this together.

If you are launching at Orange Beach, it's inter coastal all the way except across Mobile Bay. Go under Dauphin Island bridge and you are back in the waterway. Pull a chart out. It's a great trip.
pugnacious3333
04-06-2010, 04:55 AM
Yeah, from the intercoastal, once you pass ship island, veer south near the cat island light, this will take you between ship and cat. Water is plenty deep there with no obstructions. Just take care when getting close to the islands, at cat island, the water gets shallow a good ways out. Best thing to do is make a wideeeee swing around south tip and pull into smugglers, anchor there for the night. You can get pretty close to shore there, depending on the tide.

With the oil spill i hope we can still have this rally, i was out at cat 4/29 and they have the wetlands and coves boomed off. I will keep everyone updated as the situation unfolds
A Few Dollars
04-30-2010, 08:23 AM
How good do you think those booms work in the 8' - 12' seas predicted this weekend?
twintrim1
05-02-2010, 08:45 AM
With the water conditions i have seen this week, those booms are as usefull as trying to stop a runaway train with a piece of gauze stretched across the tracks
twintrim1
05-07-2010, 04:58 PM
I do not know if i should roll dice and try to make this rally happen or not.
With the slow but steady encroachment of the oil slick (by middle may it will either be all over cat, or florida is in trouble) and the boom closure's of many of the good fishing spots
Should I stick with this date may 15 - 16 or cancel and try in a month or two.
If the oil is not here by next weekend how many of you will still want to attend??????
Please post so that we all can get an idea of who is willing to come. I do not want to cancel, but I also do not want to haul all the gear out there and be the only one to show, (this has happened before) trying to eat 100lbs of crawfish by myself before it goes bad is not fun.
Please let me know your intentions. If the oil is not here yet then it may be the last time for a long time we can enjoy an unspoiled barrier island and we will do this.
pugnacious3333
05-07-2010, 07:12 PM
Really won't know for a few more days, maybe a week, whether the oil will reach cat, and whether it will be bad enough to keep people from going, though I suspect it will. I say wait til about wed or thur to make the call. I may try and ride out there tomorrow or sunday, i'll let you know what I see.

I regret to inform everyone that the encroaching slick and booming activities around the barrier islands will require us to cancel the rally.........
I have consulted with DMR and the coast guard before making this decision.
I ask everyone to pray that they get this well capped or we are all in for more trouble than anyone can imagine

Are you talking about Cat Island or Ship Island?
There are no piers at Cat Island, but you can get your boat into smugglers cove and anchor up, just watch your depth around the tips.
Water is very deep off the pier at Ship Island, but rises sharply a few hundred yards off the beach.

05-15-2010, 08:08 PM

Thank you Jason. I was talking SHIP but will breakout the chart tomorrow and look at Cat to find the cove you speak about............

No problem. At Ship Island, on the pier side, you've got 20-plus ft depths out to about the end of the pier, then less and less as you approach land. But with 4', you should be able to get half way between the end of the pier and the beach.
Lots of big boats anchor up in smugglers cove at Cat Island. You have to make a wide swing around south spit to avoid the shallow sand bar, but if you enter smugglers right down the center, you've got 6-7 ft depths a pretty good ways into the cove. Good fishing in there too. :)

sorry for remaining so quiet about this rally but I have been patiently waiting for a response from the gccf.
I finally got an answer. 10% of what i lost but enough to have a small budget for this event.
My plan is to bring out the boilers, grill, and of course the blender for an afternoon/evening of food and fun.
To make this truly different after sunset i will have a portable drive in movie system set up so we can watch a movie under the stars from the beach or your boat, the screen is 15'/20'
I am thinking JAWS would be a cool movie anyone have a good suggestion as to another film I'm listening.
So how about April 16, this is a Saturday, if the weather is going to be bad we will make the 17 the rain date.
If all that are interested and this date works for you please post so we all know who is coming, and also send me an email to john@twintrimusa.com so i can get a head count and make an email list in case we need to go to the rain date if bad weather rolls in

twintrim1
04-03-2011, 07:29 AM
Event will be at smugglers cove on the south west side itwill have the largest beaches and best area for protected anchorage, it is also the public section of island.
We will have a popup blue canopy and a very large brown and tan tent tent set up. I will have a few of the Yellow Twin Trim banners out so it will be easy to find.
also planning on having a mooring line rigged with the large orange floats marking it so feel free to tie to it and throw out an aft anchor.
I will be there all day on Sat. Plan on starting the boil early afternoon.
If anyone is interested check in at the island early and we will have a biggest fish contest
$20 a boat to get into the pool winner takes all.
I plan on rolling the movie as soon as it's dark enough
I will also have a large grill ready to go if your not a craw fish eater bring something with you and we will grill it up for you
I hope to see a good number of hull truthers out there in the hopes of making this an annual event

i have one honda 2000 eu and one kabota gennie a little larger than the honda so i should be good on those for the blenders and movie system.
If anyone has the ability to bring extra fresh water with them in case we need it for the boil pots that would be great. I am planning on filling the pot and a couple of my large coolers with fresh water at the harbor and purging the crawfish right before we head over to the island with them but if someone has a bladder for potable water let me know it would be handy

I have been watching the weather and it looks like this weekend may be unpredictable at best,
Also i did not realize this is the weekend of the crawfish festival in biloxi, and a few large events in new oreleans and the north shore.
I am polling all those who are intent on coming and those who would like to but have made plans for one of these other events
Should we delay this for a week or 2????????
The decision will be based on your input from this thread.
I would like too see the largest crowd possible and the threat of bad weather or rough conditions would make the movie screen difficult and night boating a lot less fun

I had also not realized Saturday is the Hancock high school prom and not only is my son attending (oops) but everyone i know that was going to come out to the islands have kids his age and cannot make it..........
Wind conditions will prohibit the movie screen as they are calling for 15 to 20 and that is pushing the limit of the system.
Sat. MAY 7, 2011
I have looked at every calendar of events that i can find and do not see any large events that fall on that date. I have wanted to do this rally for 15 months and hate the fact I am writing this post to reschedule again but I do want it to be a success and a good time for all.

I will have boiler, grill, and other setups for cooking if you choose to bring out something special.
We will have a substantial group camping out on the island Saturday night as the movie under the stars seems to be very popular with everyone i have told and a cat island first,
If there are some gamers planning on attending bring your system and game and we will hook it up to the big screen after the movie (component or s-vhs input it does not have hdmi). 12'/16' screen makes for a wild game.
I know there will be at least 6 to 7 boats that are in our circle of friends i would love to see 20 or 30 more Hull Truthers show but PLEASE let me know if you are going to come
I will be arriving at smugglers cove about 9 am. If you would like to have a biggest fish contest for the day stop by and sign up before you head out.
We are planning on starting the boil around noonish and should be hard at it till at least 4 or 5 depending on the crowd.
I will have the blenders plugged in if you have a special drink bring the fixins and maybe we can turn that into a contest of it's own.
I do hope to see you all there and make this at least an annual event.
