We setup out booth today and the show looks great. It's always exciting this time of year as people begin to think about boating again after the sleepy winter and holiday season.

We're just a few booths down from Brian at South Shore Dry Dock so come and stop by our booth. We've got a lot more going on at our booth than just Sea Tow memberships. Have you ever wanted to try calling Mayday on a radio as practice? You can do that with our Mayday Call Training sponsored by Cobra Radio and the Sea Tow Foundation for Boating Safety and Education.

Yes, the show is smaller than it was last year. And last year was smaller than the year before. That's the case with all boat shows right and it's an economic thing, based on what vendors commit to the show, and what they bring (fewer boats, etc).

The New England Boat Show is still one of the largest boat shows around, and it's still a pretty decent opportunity to charge up your 'boating batteries' in the middle of the winter when you'd otherwise only be able to dream about boating as your boat sits covered in the yard or at the marina.

Boat shows are tiring, both to go as a visitor, and as a vendor. Sure, it's a sales opportunity for me, but I LOVE getting to meet other boaters, talk about boating, and otherwise soak up boating in the middle of the winter. Every year, the NEBS signals to me that spring is around the corner and we'll all be out boating soon.

Definitely worth going, from my perspective at least.

gerg
02-22-2010, 06:13 AM
Eastern was there. They had a fairly large display area with at least one 30+ foot boat.

I was there yesterday and the show was much better than the Atlantic City show. There more boats, bigger boats (at least one larger Ocean and a bunch of trawler/tug/sailboats), and more stuff.

For example, I'm looking to have my prop reconditioned and re-pitched, and there zero prop guys at AC but 2-3 there yesterday. I also got a hard to find zinc used on my boat.

Good show overall, but much smaller than years past.

Hey Ethan, I said hello, bought a subscription and even did the search to get a second free tee shirt.

I didn;t even have time to look at most of the boats. I was cruising the vendors and I thought there were plenty of them this year. I may go back to look at the boats. I did notice that several makes were not represented. Plus, last yer they had some huge modern custom job that did not come back this year. Too bad really, as that boat was amazing. Wish I could remember the name.

I went aboard the new 33 or 34 foot Parker and the new 33 foot Edgewater. It seems both are expanding the line. The big Parker was pretty much the perfect off-shore fishing boat for the hard-core fisherman, while the Edgewater offered a much higher level of finish. I may go back to spend some more time looking at boats.

Actually, I disagree on the parker. While it has a large cockpit, that is all it has going for it for offshore fishing. I doubt the ride would be particularly good for a 34 foot boat (it's too light and the hull is too flat), it has outboards which for a boat that size is rediculous, and the sleeping arrangements are all wrong for overnight fishing.

It's basically a big bay boat. And not even a well laid out big bay boat.

I'm a small boat guy -- under 24' walkarounds is what I wanted to see, as well as all manner of smaller CC's. Why is it that well-known manufacturers like Grady and BW don't bring their small Walk-arounds? I have yet to see the mako or the BW 20' walk arounds (are they even still made?) I don't think that Grady even had their 18 there?

Maybe it's me, but I think the market right now is smaller boats. Even smaller than what was there. It's still a good show, especially considering the other shows out there.

Nothing if it is a cc, but it's a pilothouse. Your already restricted to fishing from the stern, and then you lose a big piece of the transom. I was ok with it when I had a 25 footer, but at 34' it's just too much boat to have to deal with outboards on the stern.

And at $300k rigged, you can do a whole lot better......

I was there yest. & had a good time. I've been going to that show for probably 35 yrs now w/ my dad, so it's always a good time to walk & talk boats together. Same as Ethan, it is also a good mark for me that spring is just about here

It was smaller, but still a pretty high level of exhibitors on hand. The Sabre 40 w/ Zeus drives was impressive, and I thought the Nord Star 31 had some of the best use of space I've seen. I thought that amphibious RIB w/ hydraulic drives was way cool, and I never knew Key West made a mini Fountain 38 in their 244 Bluewater. That thing has a beak, and a ton of bow flare - it looked a lot nicer finished out than I gave KW credit for as well. The Grady 366 Canyon is a monster.

Over-all some great boats (& stuff) to check out, and I also got to meet Noell Redman, from Redman Marine, who I liked alot & will likely have him do my mini-arch this season.

All in all, a good day for a Sunday in Feb.

I went on Saturday and was disappointed at the number of dealers and vendors NOT at the show this year. And the ones that were there had less space than the previous years. It's too bad that they don't make it more affordable for the vendors. They have plenty of space. They closed off a portion of the hall so as to not leave open areas. They could have offered a lesser price per square foot and perhaps drawn in more vendors giving everyone more for the buck.

Just my opinion.

I agree, how does prices for everything go UP when the economy just keeps going in the shitter? Inflation?? Tickets cost more, parking cost more, vendor space costs more, products cost more, boats cost more, fishing costs more, engines-generators costs more, hardtops cost more... where's the deals????????

It's the middle of winter in New England. How can you not love a boat show? Yes, smaller, parking, etc. But I love the eye candy. What a great place to see so many boats in the same place. I think I've decided that my next one is a Fortier 26' or maybe the Albin 28'. Now to just figure out how I can afford it? I offered up my Parker 23se as a trade, but the silence was telling.

The boat show is like ground hogs day. It means 7 weeks till fishing.

And I picked up 2 nice rods from the badfish guys. Local hookers. Great deal on some great rods.

Went to the show yesterday. Saw most of the people I wanted to see. Picked up an Autotether and a few other goodies. Stopped by to say hello to Ethan, but he must have been playing hooky yesterday.

Reminded me that the best kind of boat is one that’s already paid for.

I went to the show today with my 2 boys and one of their friends. The show was about 25% smaller than last year (which was already 25% smaller than the year before that) but it was packed!

We were there from 11:00 - 3:00. Said hi to a few of the guys from this forum, impressed the lady at the Sea Tow booth with my 1-handed bowline tying ability, fed the boys some overpriced hamburgers and bought myself a new Gill rain jacket.

Lots of people walking the aisles, lots of boats with sold tags on them, lots of used boats marked sale pending on the dealer bulletin boards.

Maybe the economy is turning, maybe not, things looked pretty good at the boat show today, however.

I know its a smaller show, but I went yesterday, for the day and still didn't see everything. It was pretty packed. I talked to a dealer and he was saying it was supposed to be canceled, because the company that puts it on backed out this year, but the dealer network stepped in and took it over. I'd say it's well worth it though, they are getting some good business. There is a lot there and most of it is pretty nice. I can't think of too much that I wanted to see that wasn't there.

I went thinking it would take me a couple of hours to get through the show and ended up staying five hours. Saw a lot of people I know in the industry, and heard more than a few people say business was picking up. I gather Boston Yacht Sales moved several Sabre powerboats and I heard Bosun's Marine may have sold a few Edgewaters. I was pleased by the number of lines that were there given the dismal economy -- Pursuit, Boston Whaler, Hydrasport, Edgewater, Grady, Sailfish, and a few others. Much better than show I expected, especially after the disappointing show in Providence.

Went yesterday, great show. Had a blast with some friends, spent $2,700. Did my small part to boost the boating economy. Certainly seemed like they sold a lot of boats, based on all the magic marker SOLD statements written on the boats. Good for them, hope things are turning around. Got to sit, shoot the breeze and have a beer on a Hinckley, doesn't get much better then that!

Just to clarify, North American Expositions was not going to back out. They were negotiating to sell the show, which they did, to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) which owns and operates a dozen or so large boat shows around the country (www.boatshows.com). This is a great move for the New England Boat Show and, in my opinion, will be great for boaters in years to come.
