I am working on a project at dalhgren an we are looking for a house to rent for 3 months.
we would prefer something on the water with a dock and close to restaurants etc. I am not at all familiar with the area so any advise is welcome

I think the most populated area along there would be the Colonial Beach area - for stores, restaurants, etc..
Haven't been there in probably 20+ years, but I think the place has had a revitalization, and more like a "seaside village". It's about 10-12mi. down the Potomac from Dahlgren, on the VA side.
Depending on how far you want to drive to work, I think it would be a decent place and not TOO pricey? ;?
Maybe Google the place, as well as Potomac Beach (upper west end area of Colonial Beach).
Hope this will get you started?
I think Dahlgren was the "home base" of the AEGIS system for the Nav, if I remember correctly, and would be a cool place to work.
What time of year will you be there? The Potomac River is a BIG area, with LOTS of good fishin' - at least it was when I was up there last (for ROCK!)! ;cool; There's also a couple of nice creeks in the Colonial Baech area, right off the river, with homes.
Probably some members here from that area, too that will chime in?
EDIT: I JUST saw "Colonial Beach area" in your subject. :roll:Q:grin: You must have already been "searching"?

Bring the boat but watch the tides, esp when they run opposite the wind. Not really the best time for fishing though. Before the croaker run, after striper season, and too cold to excite the cats or bass. Now if you were getting there in late May/early June it would be ideal.
Most likely what you'll find will be yellow perch in Feb with some early crappie coming on as well. Nansemond (OK - I meant Nanjemoy creek, the one west of Port Tobacco Creek) would be a good place to look for either. Best marina/ramp is actually across the river at the entrance to the Port Tobacco river.
Another one on Mattox creek south of Colonial Beach. The ramp in Colonial Beach itself can be a bear at low tide, watch for a hump of blown out rock past the end of the ramp from power loaders.
I've got a crew there supporting DTI, one of the guys stays in Fredericksburg. Really, except for fishing, the closest good shopping is either Fredericksburg or Waldorf. The northern neck is a nice area to retire for sportsmen, but is still pretty undeveloped
Heck, with this weather it would not surprise me to see the Potomac freeze over.
I know a lot of the housing is vacation homes, but really don't recall too many ever being for rent.
Don't forget to hit the crab houses on the MD side of the Potomac while there.

Spring striper season and the croaker will be there too. If you are eligible (I think you would be) get a PRFC boat license, then everyone on the boat can fish the Potomac and the Bay

Where is this Nansemond creek you speak of Shem? I think you'd be hard pressed to find a house to rent for just 3 months. There are quite a few transient motels on the Maryland side of 301 within 5/6 miles from Dalgren, most are run by towel heads now and not very pleasent. Two are family owned by locals, the Bel Alton motel is an older place but kept fairly clean. The Thunderbird is right beside it run by an older lady, only I here shes in and out of the rooms when guest are absent. Bring the boat because there is plenty of good fishing to be had. Further up the Potomac some excellent Monster catfishing to be had, and those cow rockfish being caught on the coast will be in the area spawning along with the with the cats. Seems you can help but catch one while catfishing, major pullage and fun even if you can't keep it. Plenty of bass to be caught not to far up river from Dalgren too. As far as ramps in the area there are a few but spread far apart and most in bad shape.

You got me. Your name says it all. Been gone 5 years now so all the old Indian names from up there are blending into ones from other areas.
You fish the hole by the big red bouy across from the ramp there? Used to hold lots of eating size cats in the late spring.
