View Full Version : Magothy Seafood - What Happened?

I went to pick up my boat from Ferry Point in Nov and noticed that Mathothy Seafood packed up and moved out. I heard a couple of older gents talking at the dock while I was cleaning up boat saying the owner of Ferry Point raised their rent to high, so they simply closed up. ;?

Not that I care all that much since their food was for crap and boat yard was always cluttered with customer cars, but it was nice to have a place to grab a cold one back at the dock after a day on the bay. Even though their food stunk and they were really expensive they were always packed so I can't imagine they were hurting.

Anyone hear of anything?

They trippled the guys rent so he said he was out of there. Closed up shop and left. My neighbor was a regular there..

oh crap!

i guess this just happened? we were just there maybe a little over a month ago...last time i had the boat out, in fact. it was a short trip across the river for us.

agreed that it was nothing special food-wise, but it was a cool place to take the boat for a quick happy hour trip if i didn't want to run to annapolis.

maybe they will get someone else in there who will bring in some decent food? can't imagine it would stay unoccupied for too long.

I don't know, but if the owner trippled the rent my guess is Ferry Point probably is not all that anxious to back-fill the space. It made for a lot of extra work for the marina during the summer months managing all of the cars, trailers, trash etc. They probably can get more in storage then they were collecting in rent without the hassles which might explain the economics behind the rent increase. I mean that yard was FULL when I was there in Nov, so lord knows they could use the extra space. That said, I hope I am wrong and they find a cool place to back-fill.

I run over to the Narrows or Cantler's anyway to grab food, but like Jack pointed out it was kind of a cool and convenient place for some to cruise over and sit on the water while enjoying a beer and some fried food. I keep my boat there so it wasn't quite as much fun for me to cruise up and tie off to grab a bite.

Magothy Seafood is actively looking for a new location and I'm confident they will find one. I was told not to expect anything until Spring though. I used to go there a lot before I moved to Kent Island.

I have heard both versions:
Owners would rather turn the dockage area for restaurant into more slips and that they would like a full service sit down (fancier) restaurant in the space.
I also heard Captain Don was looking at the Cheshire Crab site in Pasadena.

Well, THIS should be interesting. Having grown up in that area I can't possibly imagine where this would be.

Winchester, No way.
Pines on the Severn, No room.
Joyce Lane, They don't want riff-raff coming in there.
Glen Oban, see Joyce Lane
The old Birney's Boat Dock, maybe
Rugby Hall, see Joyce Lane and Glen Oban
Round Bay, possibly?
Near Bluff Point??

Then again, you did say it was "Private".

Wouldn't be at the old Sappington yard would it? I know they were trying to fix that place up.
Just1more, when you said Rugby Hall did you mean the old Wroxeter on Severn School location? That would be too cool but doubt they could get it Zoned. Spent 9 years of my youth there and would have graduated there if it didn't fail.
I will miss Magothy too because I could stumble home from there.

pat sajak has a house in bluff point. he married a UMD girl back in the 80s and they've kept a house in annapolis.

there was a rumor that michael jordan had a house in bluff point when he was with the wizards.

there's some nice digs in there.

really interested in seeing where this thing turns out to be... old sappington's would be a possibility...didn't they tear down that old boat house there last year? wonder what's going back up in its place?

I was referring more to the neighborhood rather then the building (Wroxeter) itself. A buddy of mine bought and renovated Wroxeter and lived there for several years. Can't really see that place as a "Private Club". Although it would be a fantastic setting to host private events and parties!

I'll go with Sappingtons, too.

Magothy Seafood has been at that location for at least 30 years. I used to go there in the 70's to get crabs.

The bar was in walking distance from my place on the Magothy, I'll miss the convience of that place.

I thought the food was pretty good, pub grub is always good after a pitcher.

Wow, sad to hear. I used to work at the Yacht Services company there at the marina back in 2002-2003. At the time I had been layed off from the IT industry and worked there because I didn't like taking unemployment and doing nothing. I couldn't afford to eat or drink at Magothy Seafood at the time since every penny was used to pay bills, but after I got back on my feet, I would go there for beer and decent food. Brings back memories.

Talked to Captain Don the other day and he has looked at several locations. As you can imagine not much in the way of waterfront is available. He sounded pretty discouraged by how business unfriendly the local govt. had become. Fees and taxes have gone through the roof. I don't think he is done but still seams to be weighing his options.

That sucks. I hope he can put something together, he's a good man!
AACo. can be a bitch to deal with. I feel like I'm looking at a herd of deer (with my headlights) sometimes when I have to deal with them. Doesn't matter which dept. either. And you always get a different response to the same question.

So, got to talking to the peeps at Ferry Point Marina today and apparently they applied and just this week received a liquor license. They are planning to open up a new restaurant this summer in the spot previously occupied by Magothy Seafood.
