Would this work/be practical?:
2 batteries, one mainly for starting and one mainly for the toys. Seperate them with a battery switch but run a diode to keep battery number 2 charging while the selector switch is on battery number one only.

diode will work - combiner/acr better - look for a BEP module - neat stuff

http://www.yandina.com/c100InfoR3.htm is all you need. Diodes have a built in voltage drop so a combiner will give a better charge.
In addition the Combiner100 gives the starting battery preference and doesn't charge the secondary battery until there is sufficient alternator capacity available. A diode does the opposite, it charges the lowest battery first and puts them both on the alternator.
