A month or two back I caught the news media promoting helmets for tobogganing. :roll :bashhh: Their slogan was, "helmets for the nogin". I bring this to light in the wake of Natasha Richardson having a skiing accident at Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Now the morning news is blanketing the idea of everyone should be wearing helmets while skiing. Like WTF. The next thing we'll know is the insurance companies will be all over this....hell they don't want to pay out money needlessly, do they? :rofl: > :nono: So what's next, children have to wear protective face shields so they can have snowball fights? :roll

I've been noticing for years now that more and more people are wearing helmets while skiing. Kids have been for many years now and more adults are now also....I don't wear one, but probably not a bad idea....

I think I am not the only one that will say, you definitely need to wear a helmet. It might have helped in the early years.. :)

You wear a PFD while water skiing, why not a helmet for snow skiing.

All through my peak-skiing years, teens through my 20's, there were/was no one wearing helmets, they did not exist, nor did people wear them to the extent they do now. In all the poundings I took skiing, I never hit my head on the snow/ground, but did get my bell rung many a time.

This past winter, as I got to go skiing twice, I fell a few times, especially the last time I tried snowboarding and could absolutely feel my age. Even though I did not hit my head, just falling on my azz or on my hands was enough to ring my bell, so the shock to the brain through the body is enough to cause some damage, I had a headache that Saturday night for sure.

There was a Dr. on TV this morning that said while helmets can/do help minimize the damage, it is not the direct impact to the head but rather the movement of the brain within the skull that does the most damage.

Never hit the mountain snowboarding without a helmet. Not so concerned about my own abilities but very concerned about someone clipping me blindsided. It keeps my head warm too!

Sliding off the side of a snow covered mountain with two sticks tied to your feet -- two very slick sticks, just ain't natural. Snow is for lookin' at -- through a picture window, not something you want to be out playing with or in.

You don't need helmets; you need to stay out of the snow.

Eyeball, you are good. As if the thousands, if not millions are going to quit their winter sports, downhill skiing and snowboarding, or even snowmobiling because it is dangerous? And we should tell all the water skiers/wakeboarders and kneeboarders and tubers that water is for drinking, cooking and bathing in?, and that attatching a rope to a boat and being towed behind it is not natural, to stay off the water? Snow is just frozen water.

Firefly, I agree with needing a helmet when snowboarding, of the dumps I took on my azz, I can see the head snapping back, or getting hit. I was/am a whiz on skis, but while I had a great time going down the hill on the board and it was a whole new sensation/experience and I give full credit to those who are good on those boards, next time I'll stick to the skis as snowboarding was tough.

Don't be silly. We ain't staying out of the snow because it is dangerous; we're staying out of the snow because that stuff is cold! :grin:


I think we all learned about the dangers of snow skiing from Sonny Bono -- supposedly. I guess his fatal injuries are inconstant with skiing into a tree, and there is no physical evidence he actually hit the tree, unless he was skiing down hill at a very high speed -- backwards. :o

Whatever. Snow is pretty, damn pretty. And I just love to look at the stuff -- from the other side of a picture window, sipping a single malt ... Don't want anything to do with actually going out into the stuff, tho. :thumbsup:

I getcha Eyeball, I though you might be one of those, "Guns are dangerous, ban all guns-types". I'll agree that after a while, I get sick of the snow. Even these past 2 weekends I have not gone snowmobiling as it is the end of the season and by this time, we are ready for the warm-weather pursuits.

Forget the early years, now-a-days I need to wear a helmet and full body suit in Kevlar just encase the cops want to shoot me because it's a slow day for them.......bastards! :rofl:
