Florida Marine Hatcheries may be part of the Obama Stimulus Package
January 4, 2009
The Florida Marine Fisheries Enhancement Initiative Partners have submitted a comprehensive hatchery proposal to be considered as part of the upcoming federal economic stimulus package. The package is being submitted to Governor Crist's office and to Florida's congressional delegation.
The stimulus package would construct 7 recreational marine hatcheries on the East and West Coasts, creating 3,129 immediate jobs and 169 permanent green jobs for Florida at a cost of $138 million. An additional $10 million has been requested for critical fish habitat restoration for the Indian River Lagoon and Tampa Bay; an investment creating an additional 350 immediate green jobs for local communities.
State-wide angler and boater support has been strong and growing for the Initiative.

Gee- why would Florida need "gamefish" hatcheries? Didn't committing genocide on the net fishermen fix everything?
And- why would there be a need for critical habitat restoration? Hmm, must be all the sportfishermen shitting in the water from their waterfront Mcmansions?

If they just have to spend our tax dollars, the facilities at Flamingo were never re-built after hurricane Wilma... All the planning is in place, the amount needed is $18 million. That would provide a new motel, restaurant, cabins, etc. As a National Park that receives a great many visitors each year it's a shame nothing's been done for lack of funds. The usual routine would be for the Park Service to propose the funding to the Interior Department.... If approved Interior would then ask for the money from Congress. Unlike many, many projects the facilities would generate a return to the general fund for years...
As it is now the nearest place to stay if you want to come visit is fifty miles away in Florida City....
I do have a personal interest in seeing Flamingo restored since I'm a permitted guide in the Park and work out of Flamingo many days each year. Lots of folks went to all the meetings as ENP hashed out what they wanted to do with Flamingo but not one dollar has been allocated.

I second the Flamingo rebuild. That's too great a place to allow it to rot away.
