Help needed, 2002 said engine's tilt/trim is stuck in almost full down position. Engine is counter (port) of pair.

Tilt motor runs (I can hear it) however no up or down movement.

Tried to manual release to tilt all the way up (white plastic screw) so I can diagnose problem, will not move without excessive force.

Advice needed, I am sure I can purge and refill pump if that is issue. Just need to get outboard up.

Thanks for all advice.

Tom

If the pump motor is running but the engine isn't moving, the pump gear may have sheared the pin that holds it on the motor shaft. Happened to a buddy's Merc, we found it by performing an autopsy after replacing the pump motor. If you open the bleed screw and hit the trim button, does fluid spray out or just dribble a little?

We had to raise a 200 hp Opti because of pump failure a few weeks back. Even after turning the screw it was a booger
to tilt up from the ground. You might need some help doing this.

Trim relay maybe?

Pump won't run if the trim relay doesn't fire, he said the motor runs but the engine doesn't move.

Update:

OK, got outboard up manually and added trim fluid. Got engine moving up and down again, but....

Center Ram cylinder is leaking pretty badly. Enough that tilt/trim quickly was not acting right again.

So the next question is, can the center cylinder just have bad seal(s) causing leak and can it be repaired with out buying / installing new cylinder, which appears to be pretty expensive.

Advice appreciated. Thanks for previous replys.

There is a seal kit for the Tilt and trim and yes you can just repair the tilt seals. You can do it without removing the motor but it is a little more difficult to do especially if the pin in the tilt rod is corroded. You have to get the motor up and supported and then you have to remove the tilt rod pin to gain access to the rod and remove it. You will need a spanner wrench to turn the cap out of the tilt housing and once you do that, it will come out and there are seals in the cap and more on the tilt rod. Most of the time it is best to replace all the orings and seals while you have it out.

Get a shop manual if you have never done one as it can seem complicated as you will have to remove the nut on the bottom of the tilt rod to remove the cap and replace the scraper ring, and 2 orings in the cap.
