Hello all,
Thought you might enjoy this short video clip that I captured while diving in Cozumel. It shows our dive master blowing an air ring and then swimming thru it. WAY cool man.

Dennis- Did you happen to dive Devil's Throat while you were in Coz?

That is cool but from what I see also wreckless. Your Dive Master is breaking the number one Rule of SCUBA .... NEVER ascend holding your breath unless you are asking for an embolism. Embolisms can happen even at shallow depths, an inexperienced non-certified local youth died of one in 20 feet of water. I was the one who found his ditched gear on the bottom. I would question the quality of instruction from a dive master that finds it necessary to show off. IMO it is wreckless endangerment because someone else may try it themselves. Yes it was cool but ....
Sorry do not mean to be negative but underwater is nowhere to be without your common sense.

I would even take that number one rule one step further and drop the "while ascending". Actually, it looks like he broke the second rule, too. I'm a dive instructor, and when I teach a class, I lay out my "Four Rules of SCUBA" on the first night and refer to them throughout the course:
1. Never hold your breath
2. Ascend slowly (30’/min) and maintain control
3. Stop, Breathe, Think, Act
4. Maintain neutral buoyancy at depth

Hi fishnutz, thanks for correcting me.
I whole heartedly agree I should have dropped the "while ascending" part. The rule is NEVER!!!!! even if in panic SCREAM all the way up LOL. I have been on several dive trips in the islands and can say this ..where do they get their instructors and Dive Masters? Most I would not trust my life to. Sadly, the wreckless behavior not only endangers themselves but also the person who may have to save their A**.
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
Seems to me this guy feels the physics of the gas laws diminish with the level of expertise or certification .. NOT!! I see that the video was shot in 2005, I do not doubt he has emobilized since then. Leave the bubble rings to the dolphins to create and play in.

fishnutz - 12/17/2008 8:02 PM Dennis- Did you happen to dive Devil's Throat while you were in Coz?Yes, we did Punta Surthe first year we went (2003). I have a still photo of the coral "cross" in the Cathedral. That dive messed up my Sea & Sea MX-5 camera (with YS-20A strobe). I failed to realize it was only rated to 120'. In 2004, I switched to video and learned how to use Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, and Encore.
You might want to check out the DVDs we have produced. They are available on eBay (bruizer-man).

Punta Sur (Devil's throat) is a neat dive...kind of disconcerting the first time you do it, but a neat experience. It's actually one of my favorite dives-and the harder the current is running, the better-it's about as close as a human will come to being flushed down a toilet, except without the crappy ending!

I don't know why your assuming he held his breath the whole time. You can't see him all the time in the video. He may have let out a lot of air just before he began his ascent and then smaller amounts when he was too far from the camera to catch the detail. I personally don't know if I am expelling enough air or not when I ascend so I tend to blow out quite a bit initially and then less as it becomes available on ascent. He could have done the same. Not having been there why are you so quick to judge?

hi fishinshallow,
I was not being quick to judge .. I watched the vid numerous times because frankly I could not believe one to be so .. I will keep the judgement to myself ... especially a "Dive Master". I have been diving long enough to know when someone is holding their breath. Watch the video carefully the air ring was the last air to leave his lips before he hit the surface and was it enough to prevent an embolism apparently so, he did survive. Sorry but he DID break the golden rule of SCUBA just to show off and IMO that is wreckless because someone else might find it cool, try it and not be so lucky.. Did you see the one about the "Dive Master" that hand feeds and then kisses nurse sharks on the snout? Then one day (it was bound to happen) the shark bit his mouth & face messing him up pretty good all in front of his dive group. Even Steve Irwin, such a tragic loss because he got careless swimming "above" a large sting ray and it got spooked. A local woman lost her hand to the wrist by a baracuda when she was carrying speared fish back to the boat above her head so that her husband did not have to swim with the bloody fish. The point I am making is simply this .. It is a dangerous enough sport in an alien environment without making it even moreso by lack of common sense and poor judgement. A "Dive Master" should darn well know better. Underwater is not a place to try to be "Cool".
Stupid is as Stupid does
