was wondering what ant would give the best range/performance.i know that height is the biggest variable, but givin a high quality 4 ft, or a cheaper 5ft, would the taller one perform better?

Buy a good antenna. Digital 529 is a great ant and cost about $100 retail. This is a 8ft 6BD gain antenna. This is the standard ant for VHF. If you are going off shore you NEED a good quality ant. IT will give you the best performance and well worth the money. Good luck

I agree. Buy the digital, many posts on the old forum (posts that are going to be ported over this weekend) singing the praises of digital antennas. I just bought mine yesterday.
