I was wondering if anyone could give me a list of beginner fishing kayaks and which brands too steer clear from. I weight around 120lbs and kayaking on the Chesapeake Rivers. I don’t know how much I will be willing to spend yet it depends on how much I want the kayak.

Sorry for another which one should I get? Thread. It’s just so hard finding that perfect kayak with lots of brand names out there.

Your best bet is to try and find a local shop that will allow you to demo kayaks. That way you will get a feel for how different models and sizes paddle and you should get a good idea whether or not fishing from a kayak is for you. There are usually plenty of good deals on used kayaks that often include the necessary accessories to get started (life jacket, paddle, rod holders, etc). You can save a bundle buying used because the accessories really add up when buying new. www.kayakfishingstuff.com is a really great resource.

The site I mentioned above has a pretty good for sale section. I'd also keep a lookout on craigslist and any of the Maryland fishing forums.

I am the oldest kayak fishing shop on the east coast and the advice from tiderunner should not be ignored. You need to paddle as many kayaks as you can for free by going to dealers and doing demos. Take them out on nice days and go back on not nice days and try them out. After awhile you will know what you want. Most used kayaks for sale are being sold because the owner realized it wasnt that good for him and his style of fishing. I an everyone I know use Hobie foot propelled. At your whight you could go as short as 10 foot.

I personally like the Hobie kayaks for fishing. The hands free pedaling and even the optimum trolling speed attained by pedaling has proven to be a slam in both fresh and salt waters. I also enjoy the versatility of pedaling/paddling/sailing/fishing. They may not be the fastest touring kayaks to paddle but they meet my needs and easy to set up for fishing with removable equipment to interchange uses.

and of course sailing too

Test as many kayaks as you can and settle on the one that fits you and your intended use(s).

Hobies are excellent. If you think this is something you are going to stick with I would recommend checking them out. With your size the sport may do you well.

I would check out the Native Ultimate Kayaks, the are soo stable for fishing, you can get them in either a traditional paddle style, or with a pedel drive. You could also get a motor mount for a small motor. I got mine at www.rnrmarinestore.com

Doesnt anyone read the initial question? The guy is looking far a cheap , small , kayak for his wheight of 120 lbs and you guys are trying to sell him on a $3000 setup. Hey buddy, look for a used Ocean Kayak frenzy. Is it a great fishing kayak? No, but it will do the job and you shouldnt need to spend more then $150

Check out the Malibu Mini-X. It is light, easy to handle both in and out of the water and it is the most stable (by far) small yak on the market. Try one on for size before buying.

Get a good seat and a good paddle.
