How do you guys transport your rods when paddling out in the surf? I have been placing mine in the rod holders and clipping the reels in. I had a bad experience doing this once and broke two rods and would like to figure out a better way to protect the rods from the inevitable roll over. Thanks.

A PVC tube is about the best thing out there to protect a fishing rod.

I installed a rod holder on the side of my kayak so that it is parallel with yak. It is still not totally protected but there is less chance of it being snapped in half at the reel. Then once I get safely past the breakers I put it in my verticle holders. I once got flipped end over end in my yak, catapulting me into the surf face down....... but rod was in perfect shape. My body wasnt!!! LOL!!!

If you Kayak has a deck hatch you can mount foam rod holder to the top of the hatch. The product was called Rod Saver it was strechy velcro and foam. I mounted both straps on the same hatch cover. I have a old Ocean Kayak supper pro with deck hatches on the front and back so could place the rods on either hatch.
I could hold up to 4 rods. I have rolled the Kayak many many times fishing the Cape Point, Hatteras surf back in the day and never damaged a rod with them mounted that way nor did one ever fall out mounted that way. Mounting on the stern in the best. Never mount anything vertical for landing in big surf your just asking for trouble and may damage your rod and Yak if you roll.

Also you could mount the spring load paddler holder on the side of your Yak. I have that also but never put there when landing.
