These guys had some amazing boat building skills that even now with computer graphics/simulations seems we cannot replicate. The skills in boat building and navigation were passed down to generations without much written record, so most of their culture was based on verbal communication between generations. I think it just helps to put boat building and navigation skills in perspective when you look at what these people accomplished. There's still no substitute for experience when it comes to boat-building skills. Imagine crossing the North Atlantic in a small sailboat without modern navigation and boat construction skills. This part of European history never ceases to amaze me.
