George: Wiring from the 498 to 502

498 BLUE wire to 502 CENTER POST on the RCA plug (NOT the external speaker plug)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector

498 BLACK to battery MINUS and to 502 SHIELD on RCA plug

Go to the Comm tab on the 498 and select MNEA IN/OUT. ALSO, you may have to go to the Comm sub-tab and select the sentences that need to be transmitted from the 498 to the 502. Those sentences are described in the 502 manual. Select all those that apply. Please let us know how this works for you. :thumbsup:

Im not sure about the colors, but I think the plug you are asking about is the external speaker plug.

George;
The Garmin 498 Power harness came with a big plug that attached to the display, and at the other end a smaller plug molded onto the cable that attached to the sounder. The rest of the cable was a bunch of bare wires, with a fuse in the red wire. If you've got some other plugs on the cable, someone put them there. There is a Garmin cable for the bigger, network units that have video out, and these have RCA plugs on them. Is this a used unit, or an open box sale?

I just hooked up my 498 to a Solaris VHF, followed the direction to a T and it didn't work. I finally called Garmin. Got a Tech on the phone in less than 60 seconds and he told me the directions are not complete and don't tell you that the brown wire from the Garmin has to be grounded as well. Problem solved in less than a minute after hours of fustration.

I would call Garmin and tell them the setup and they will walk you thru the process.

good luck

Wow
I hooked it up the way every one said and I got it to work. But the numbers on the gps were a little different then the
ones on the Icom maybe it has to do with the brown wire not being grounded??
