I am looking to go skiing in North Carolina, the first week of January. Looking at Sugar mountian and hawks nest. Any other places?

I am looking at staying on the slopes, and I want some where that I can hit resturants and the like right there at the resort.

That's some pretty good advice. Snowshoe is a bit of a drive, but well worth it if you can stay for two or more days. You could also try Beech Mtn. in NC. There are some villas that you can rent that are on the skiing trails, but most of the houses are off of the skiing area.

Any input on beech mountian?

Beech is good, you also have Appalachian Resort which is just outside Boone.

You better check to see if they will have any snow before going. For several years now NC ski areas haven't had much if any snow and they couldn't even make it due to warm temps. WV is much better.

If you insist on NC, Beech is the only reasonable option IMO if you want to have access to any resturants & bars at all. Hawks Nest is a fun run, but offers virtually zero in terms of luxurys. Snow Shoe is by far the best I have seen on the east coast, and IMO is well worth the drive. The quality of the snow is above most any other place I've seen in the east, and the runs are longer than anywhere else. Winterplace isn't really anything special, the runs are realitively short, though their snow is generally fairly decent.

Wintergreen, VA is another option. Haven't been to Beech but Wintergreen has quite a few runs and some places to rent.

NC has mostly machine made ice to bounce down a few bunny slopes on. Unless hanging with a bunch of pimply snow boarders is your thing, go on to WV or Va if you really want to ski ...

I say if you don't want to drive anywhere out of north carolina sugar is your best bet on being the biggest but it has always been packed every time i've been and hawks nest is like a dump compared to sugar.

I believe Sugar Mtn is in Banner Elk. I took my girl up there a couple of years ago for a weekend. Get a cabin or condo walking distance to the skiing-not too expensive. At night go in to town. They had a great Italian Bistro, food was awesome and the restaurant/bar is pretty sweet. It would probably only be a $10 cab ride back and forth from your condo. By far the closest place to ski.

Here is a link to the Beech Mountain website:

There's a link for lodging on the right-hand side of the page. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for the input, I am actually from Richmond Va, and all of my family are still there, so maybe we could go to wintergreen, actually one of my wifes and mine favorite spots.

All of my family is going so I am sure they would vote for wintergreen, man I just dread the drive we have a 1 year old and a 3 year old.

Every one needs to remember that we have a sever drought going on here in the NC mtns and foothills. They will not be able to make snow like the have in the past. The streams are very low and water tables are in distress. We did get a little snow last night, but it want last. WV would be a much better choice. Just leave a little earlier and enjoy the ride.

If you are looking to REALLY go snow skiing head to Utah or Colorado. If you want to go have a great time in the snow then you can't go wrong with Beech Mtn. I suggest staying at the Alpine Inn or renting a chalet on the mountain ( and dont miss dinner at Jackalope's and cocktails at one of the pubs on the mountain. Beech is the only choice for active young people that are looking for a little nightlife and want to stay near the slopes and the watering hole. My family has had a place on Beech for years and I understand that they are blowing snow in full force right now. You do gamble on having less than perfect conditions but it's not going to cost you ten grand to give it a shot and from Charelston you have 2.5 hours of driving up I 26 and then 2.5 hours of scenic driving through the mountains. You cant go wrong!

Capt. I like Hawksnest, less crowds, lower rates and night skiing, pack your own booze and walk to the slopes. Good times. Google hawksnest and get the weather reports and snowcam. Happy Holidays and Good-luck!!!

Cattaloochee only has 4 slopes open. Try Sugar.
