Planning a family trip to Corolla next spring. I'm considering trailering my 21 foot CC along in hopes of doing some fishing. I've been boating for a while, but this would be this boats first splash in the salt as I do most of my boating on Lake Erie.

I'm going to be staying in Corolla and i'm wondering if anyone has advice on public access ramps / transient dockage up that far north. What's the water like that far north in the sound (I've ordered some charts, but they haven't arrived yet)?

What about access to the ocean if I was feeling adventurous? I've been to Oregon Inlet many years ago, and remember the boats being large :) Will I run into locals heading out in boats my size?

Really any recommendations / advice is welcome.

Thanks!

You can put over at Whalehead Club in corolla and then go out into the sound behind it. I marked the channel going in and out of there with white PVC poles years ago and most of them are still there. Be careful of the shoals out there though. Along the marsh islands it gets about 1-2' but in the summer the southwest winds keep plenty of water in there usually. If you run straight out from there, the middle of the sound is navigable (3' or so) Good place to tube and hang out on the boat, only fishing up there is white perch and puppy drum usually. In winter they're catching small striper.

Thanks for the response and PMs........

So, as I thought, the Fishing isn't all that great up in Corolla. What are my options if I wanted to launch / slip the boat further south? I was told that the drive from Corolla to OI can take a while in the summer...... I'm planning on being there Easter time.... I'm guessing this is a popular season as well?

Do yourself a HUGE favor and leave the boat at home. It would be a waste of gas to trailer the boat to Corolla for a week, then you'll need to travel down to ramp across from Pirates Cove or travel further down to OI to splash the boat. If its not too late cancel the rental in Corolla and rent something in Nags Head

Forgot to add you can also slip the boat in Pirates Cove
