It largely depends on where you are and what time of year. If I could only have one lure it would be a bucktail of some type. Can't decide on the color.

I agree with the bucktail, but add a worm

since i'm partial to topwater fishing, i'd have to say a chug bug. cheap and easy to use....plus you can cast them a mile. but i've caught the majority of my rockfish jigging with stingsilvers. you also can't go wrong with storm lures and bkd's.

White 4 oz. bucktail w/ white 6" sassy shad. Put that behind an umbrella rig with 8 white 6" shads. I'm not gonna tell the rest of my secret combo. B-Faithful will get mad at me. :)

Amen to the white bucktail, w/ big red eyes.
Heck, one caught ME just a couple weeks ago...right in the back.
He smacked me when he swung back, and drove it home when he went to cast!
Thank gawd he had 2 year old line on his rod & the line snapped.

But back to the topic,
is there a more universally used lure?
Cast it naked, trim it w/ grub tails, shads, pork rinds, squid strips...

This thread is old but I'm going to post my .02 worth anyway. You cant go wrong w a white bucktail, fo sho, but I have had the best luck jigging around reef and structure with a crippled herring...those things are deadly.

Yesterday at Smith Point a solo (not in tandem) 7 oz white bucktail parachute with 9" shad way, way back was the hottest lure... (chartruse and school bus yellow with white shad also caught) I went 8 for 11 on fish from 30"-38" with just my 7 year old son and white bucktails were definately the hot ticket....

I have to admit my largest striper was caught on a single small white bucktail....solo, with a three way drop weight bouncing across the bottom in about 20 feet of water off the main channel.

Fish were caught in VA waters. You can 1 per person over 34" until Dec 31.. My last meal of fresh stripers ;)

Pilothouse was very comfy. We dropped the aft curtains and I had my little heater going. My son even took a nap for a bit in the v berths..

You have to land them in VA and you better not have lines in the water in MD with fish in the box... today is the last day so you better get out there :)

Peeler crab by a mile. Technically not a lure, but when you want to catch fish and not come up empty....
