Do any of you guys have any experience with underwater metal detectors? I am planning to buy at least one of the best one I can find. Any input appreciated.

I use the JW Fisher Pulse 8x version 2
I have 2 of these
suggested retail at kellyco.com is $1920.
I love this unit. The teck support from JW Fisher is great.
I have back line numbers to some of the tech;s that work there if you want to call with any question you may have,
I have two Garrett sea hunter detectors. One of the new model/one of the old model. The old model will run circles around the new one. New model just doesn't have the power. If you can find a old one for sale(ebay, pawn, shop ect) and send it to Brad at Garrett for a refit you will have a great detector. Their service is also great.
I have 2 White DFX units for kicking around on land. Their very good units when you learn to turn off the auto/default mood ans start learning how to make your own changes and adjustments for the difference conditions.
White has not be so strong with tech support,
I have learned how to make very good money doing this on the side,it,s out there guys. you Just got to have the nadds to dive where others will not. And more inpotainly knowing who to call when you find something. The state just loves to sink their teeth in you If they hear you have found something. I have a freind that found an spanish breast sheild and helment.
He sold it to a undercover FL agent. BUSTED!!!!!!
Remenber that detectors draw bull sharks like flys!!! hammerheads to!!!!
And when your in 0 vis that's bad news
be safe

I have a Whites PI 1000. Would not trade it for any of the newer detectors. It's a very good unit and good down to 200' depth.

Anyone have anyexperience with the sharpshooters cabelas sells. My son wants a metal detector for his b-day in Jan and I don't want to spend a fortune on something he may lose interest in.We have a lot of civil war encampments that existed in the woods behind my home thought it might be interesting to bang around with him.

Well, we bought a Minelab Excalibur 1000. I read the manual, and it all made sense here at the house. I walked around the yard with it...seemed to be working just fine.
Then yesterday we took it out to the reef.

Total confusion. None of the controls seem to do what they did in the yard. I was getting squawks, blips, and beeps all over the place, just floating on the surface with no metal around. took it to the bottom in about 12-15 ft. and waved it about six inches over our steel danforth anchor. The way that detector was working, it would not have found that 15 lb. anchor sitting in the open. the multitude of noises coming through the earphones didnt change one bit with it a few inches from a big piece of iron connected to 10 ft. of stainless chain.
I must be doing something wrong.
But the instructions are useless right from the start. It says to turn the "threshold" knob up until you hear a slight hum. Well, you don't hear a slight hum. You hear beeps, plinks, zips, groans, and about twenty other noises. Now what?

you are just not used to the machine. The beeps are readings, turn your threshold up to a hum,run the machine in pinpoint, and sensitivity in auto, now when it makes noises, check it out, stuff underwater does not look like stuff on land.Iron in particular gets a heavy buildup of rust that becomes an unidentifiable blob.Play around with it and get to know it,and keep your found items wet until you can determine what type of treatment it needs. If you aren't going to preserve it,leave it.Happy hunting, the excaliber is an excellent choice.
