Going to costa rica for a week in dec ( 15th -22nd ) looking for advise on who to fish with . We will be staying 5 minutes from los suenos , and i know there are tons of boats for hire . Just need some advise on who to fish inshore and offshore as we wish to do some of each. Also what can we expect to catch during that time of the season . Thanks ahead of time guys

I fished on the sailfish out of Los Suenos. We came back dead tired after hooking 5 marlin, 4 sails and a few dolphin for dinner too. Other boats were coming back with sad faces after a long day of catching nothing. If you want, I can try to locate the captain's information. Just PM me.

i suggest making the 1 hour ride to quepos to fish...less presure, better fishing and MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE. the los suenos/Jaco area is for some reason way over priced on everything from boats and lodging, to meals and souvaneers, even a non-alcohol beer that runs me $1.30 in quepos costs like $3 at any of the dives in jaco.

the fishing should produce marlin, sails, wahoo, dorado, snapper and grouper offshore and inshore expect roosterfish and monster snook, 25-50 pounders!

Check out http://www.tropicalfishing.com/costarica.html for information about fishing throughout Costa Rica including Los Suenos.
The sailfishing should be hot around that time of year with occasional marlin & dorado.

Let's see out of Los Sueños: Miss Behav'in 32 Forbes, Grand Slam 32 Topaz, Hoo's Your Daddy 36 Topaz, Bethina 38 Glastech, NBC (sold recently - 38 Custom), The Bite-Spanish Fly-Super Fly 42 Customs, Marlin Mujer 48 Daytona.

Jaco is where the employees live that work in LS.

IMHO Quepos is the poor man's LS - nothing wrong with that. They all fish the same areas, so why pay $300/nt at Marriott when you can get a decent room and walk to the harbour spit for $140/nt at the Kamuk? Why pay $1500 for Spanish Fly, when Ojaran III is $900?

Choice is yours to make.

funny to see the Ojaran III stil working in quepos. I had the chance to bujy her about 6 years ago for $65,000 USD. I kick myself everyday now.

also in quepos, is the LAMANTA. 27 SHAMROCK, capt dave dobbins, i used to work for him down there..www.fishlamanta.com

his boat is extremly well maintained mechanically and fishing wise, and his rates are cheaper than alot of the guys and really goes the extra mile for you

the best thing you can do is be in contact with your captain (bot booking agent) prior to booking to get his input about what he will get you into, how he likes to fish etc., this will also give you an idea about his basic fishing knowledge. there are some good "captains" here, but there are more "captains" who know nothing more than drag baits for billfish. there are some boats that consistantly produce better than others. you won't get this info from somebody in some office or someone booking their own boats.

another thing to remember is most of the people you will run into here speak only spanish, not everybody speaks spanish so this could be something else to discuss before booking.

Still fishing fine. We had a good four days on her and two days on the smaller Ojaran II. Just can't beat them for the price.

Unless I'm going to Canada, Belize or England - I just naturally assume that they don't speak English. Learning a bit of espana helps.

well, than is not necessarily the scenario these days. if you don't ask, yes, chances are that you could end up with someone who speaks absolutely no english, but there are alot of english speaking costa ricans and plenty of north american captains here as well, captains from the states who have actual captain lisences, you all understand that in these third world countries there is no required training of the guys running the boats that you charter...they get a job on the deck, learn to fish and eventually steer the boat and sooner or later end up at the helm ;?
